Excuses aside, it simply was not a great album. Sabbath's 13 sold more than double in its first week and went straight to US number 1 and the point was made above that AC/DC's Black Ice sold by the bucketload (£6m and counting).

They tried to second guess the market with that last LP, instead of making one from the heart. Music fans are savvy and Aerosmith by numbers won't cut it.

After MFAD I won't be losing any sleep.

The last really good studio album was Get A Grip. I would say that Pump was the last great / classic Aerosmith album.

Nine Lives and Just Push Play were ok, but nothing that memorable. MFAD was poop. I doubt I'll ever listen to it again.

I really REALLY liked Honkin' on Bobo. What a cool album. Even though this is considered a studio album, I consider it a "covers" album since that is what most of it is. I would have no problem seeing the boys from Boston throw out another one of these albums. I haven't listened to this one for years, I should really pull this CD out and give it a few spins. :)

To deny the change in the musical landscape is to deny the reality of the world we live in now.

Things have changed drastically over the last 20 years at a rate nobody in the business could have foreseen.

I do agree that many old bands/artists come across like they are whining about sales etc., but the shift to buying single songs is going to wreak havoc on the way music is recorded, it could be within 5 years a full album will be an anomaly and we'll be fed a steady stream of "EP's", maybe a half dozen songs at a time by artists. The only ones who might still make full albums are mega-stars like Lady Gaga, Madonna etc.
Very true.

there are significant issues with it though. right now $ is in touring, you need material to carry a tour. maybe not a festival but a tour. otherwise your left with covers.

Artists should just take things onto their own hands and produce the music themselves and create albums if they choose to. I believe those are the ones that will carve their own destiny. If they don't music is about to get very very bad cause creativity will fade away completely.

I still think albums have a long, long way to run. They may not sell any longer but the artistic compulsion to record something that is 40 mins + stems from a basic human requirement to create a musical journey long enough to have an impact. It's why classical musicians recorded symphonies.

Many acts have tried the songs or digital e.p. deal and most come back to albums (e.g. smashing pumpkins). It's really not that simple and Aerosmith being dead in the water has more to do with their lack of ability to create something worthwhile than anything else.
