^^Going to start calling you "Professor Jim". :grinthumb

From my personal experience just listening to many vinyl rips done by folks with a lot better gear and technical know how than I possess, in almost every case sound vastly superior to the CD. Some exceptions of course but for heavy guitar with lots of distortion it's one of the easiest listening tests to do to hear the difference between old analog and a digital version.

One rip that opened my eyes was Blue Oyster Cult's "Secret Treaties". It's not even a really well produced album, not compared to so many others I could list but I love that recording anyway. I downloaded a 16-44 rip, listened to it once on my PC sound system and couldn't believe how much better it was than my CD. So I bought a near mint vinyl copy and won't even look at the CD again let alone play it.:D

It's hard to pass the new old technology up. The new TT's and Cartridges out there are fantastic and are now at prices most people can afford. My old B&O with its mmc2 can't touch my little Red Ortofon and Project TT.

^^Is that the "Red Cadenza" Taha? ;)
That would be nice, but I have wondered how hi a grade my Project would take. Maybe as high as the Bronze and a slight chance at the Black. ????
I bought the Red to get away from the true entry level that came w/ the TT.

^^I have no idea what level Cartridge would work with your Pro-Ject TT. You could ask someone at Needle Doctor or Pro-Ject themselves, they have a working relationship with Ortofon.

LG what kind of equipment are the folks you know running for analog to digital conversion? At this point I believe I am making as good a rips as I will be able to without buying different equipment.

I know I can make better than CD rips which is good for now. Even though I don't believe I am using all of it I'll still likely rip to 24/192 file format, for the time being anyway.

^^It's been a long time since I saw/read any of their information Jim, I think they've all retired from the field.

I can say that 2 of them had rigs that were top of the line, at least $50,000+ turntable/cartridge/separate phono stages, cables the works and the best software to convert everything. One of them used to redo his rips of his favorite albums whenever he upgraded his equipment and then ask us what we thought if we could hear the difference. Another guy you could mail him your favorite vinyl and he'd rip it for you and then send the record back, I haven't seen any traces of them since Demonoid went dark a couple years ago and Avax banned one of them.

Thanks LG... it would be interesting to know what the "big boys" are using.

I think its going to take some equipment to produce a reliable higher resolution digital audio signal from the analog TT. One thing... there seems to be a lot of "debate" (if you call it that) about weather or not the higher resolution is necessary. Same thing when I used to "modify" (if you know what I mean) GM V8 engines, folks take themselves too seriously

some things never change. I would just like to see if how good of a digital file I really could make :oyea:

^^I used to enjoy reading about the ultimate high end gear when I was a kid, but knew I would never be able to afford it. But for some folks instead of cars/boats/planes they collect audio equipment, me I'm happy playing in the shallow end that I can afford.:D

Most rips I have on the HD are 24-96's, and I do have quite a few 24-192's. One of the best 24-192's I have is Neil Young's Harvest, it is stunningly well done. I was going to buy a new vinyl copy but after listening to the HQ rip I decided I didn't need to spend $40 on that album.

What I really liked about those folks was their dedication to music, their purpose was to preserve the best quality possible before the new technology took over and we lost all our golden analog forever. Their work was an eye-opener for me the first time I listened to some classic albums and it's one of the main reasons I went back to vinyl in a big way while there's still time to get most of my old favorites.

This is all for fun anyway, as long as you are happy with whatever results you get ripping your vinyl that's all that really matters.

Between my left and right speakers...
Changes...

^Now you folks got me thinking of upgrading my cartridge. :D I'm sure that Orto will improve the sonics than my current Shure needle.

My car has iPod capability. I've been taking advantage of it the last two weeks and have not used the radio. Placed on shuffle, I like my playlist much better. It can go from Led-Zeppelin to Sinatra to The Rolling Stones to Elvis and it's been enjoyable. Best thing about is that it re-charges it too.
