I don't think there is something like that. you just have to look through your artists
or thru itunes
Then how many bands do you have on your ipod?: but my music selection is more scattered lots of 80s one hit wonders. so that's why I don't NEAR as much as some of you guys
not sure my count on ipod but itunes count is 1654 bands.

Dunno if it's the same on all iPods, but on mine (iPod Classic) you go to Music -> Artists. Once you click on an artist, the first line is "All songs" and a number beneath (only if you have more than one album by the artist). That number is the number of songs of the particular artist on the iPod.

I'm a really big AC/DC fan so I got 81 songs by them but then got 16 from The Stones and Led Zeppelin.
