Is Nirvana an overrated band? (and other ones)

I haven't read the whole thread and so I'm not sure what you're getting at. There were lots of metal bands in the early 90s, some of the main waves include the death metal explosion, the norwegian black metal scene, and the "groove metal" style headed by Pantera.
Well, there you are then. No. I meant Heavy Metal not some sub genre that focuses on one tiny aspect of musical expression.

I say this because I believe 'Grunge' is nothing more or less than the next progression in actual heavy metal. That is the greatest compliment I can give to those who are or were part of that scene.

I don't believe 'Grunge' is any more significantly different from New Wave of British Heavy Metal than NWOBHM is from bands like Sabbath. So I'm not a big fan of denying it's pretty illustrious pedigree.

Figured I'd finally give my "little shout" on the matter, I was actually listening to the legendary track Smells Like Teen Spirit, last night :)... Not a song I am really crazy for but I find it, "interesting", I'd like to know why the song was written/what is it about/etc, as well as some of their other tracks.

Back on topic XD, going on my definition of an "Overrated Band"...

Yes, I think they are overrated, sorry but that is just me XD. I've been hearing the same spill over and over since I got into middle school, "Dude if you like Classic Rock you'll like Nirvana.", that was not the case AT ALL XD. I think last year I finally learned to enjoy In Bloom, yet again nothing I go crazy for XD, sorry.
Don't get me wrong, their music is alright but I don't hear anything to go crazy over or anything "groundbreaking" they did, sounds to me just like all the music of the time, again sorry. Maybe if I do a little background searching, watch some interviews and some more listening, I will start to understand it all, but as of right now I'll stay where I'm at. Peace and Love to all.

Well, there's no denying that bands such as Sabbath, Slayer, Motorhead & others are some of the biggest influences on grunge.

Now what we decide to call heavy metal and what we decide not to call heavy metal... that's an even more enormous discussion that we could spend years debating.

While "Nevermind" smacks of Kurt Cobain's legitimate artistic angst,I'm afraid there is far more form here than substance. We've all heard over and over how insightful and intelligent Cobain was,but of course, these positive personal characteristics do NOT gurantee that such an individual is destined for true MUSICAL genius just because they pick up a guitar. There is great and worthwhile message on the record, but I'm afraid from a straight musical vista,he sounded to me like he was biting off a bit more than he could chew.....

Well, I know it when I hear it. And through the black hole of the 80s I waited a long time for it to come back. Grunge is nothing more or less than metal so I find the term laughable.

which is probably why I preferred Nirvana, music from those band always seemed more heavy metal or something to me. Nirvana's stuff was maybe a bit more stripped down.

There are way better bands then Nirvana. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters and Black Sabbath just to name some. I honestly like Nirvana's music but it's too repetitive and sounds like they repeat words like there trademarks at times. As for KISS, they are overrated big time. I mean just because Gene Simmons is in a band doesn't mean that the band is one of the greatest. There are way better vocals and bands out there. AC/DC, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Stones to name a few. Though Detroit Rock City is pretty good.
