Trespass is not to be overlooked either, it's a little bit softer than the big three you posted and a lot smaller than The Lamb but it's no less enjoyable than all of those albums. :grinthumb

You cannot go wrong with the first five albums after From Genesis to Revelation (which isn't terrible, but nor is it representative) plus the live album.

I also like Steve Hackett's first five solo albums. The other members had their moments on solo albums, but Hackett was consistently good. Collins's jazz rock work with Brand X was far better than his solo career in my opinion. Credit should go to Ray Wilson who has released some dynamic reworked versions of Genesis songs since his tenure with the band.

foxtrot is fantastic.

before about a month ago, my top genesis album was a perpetual rotation of three... selling england, lamb and trick of the tail. my general view was that before selling england, the band had many high points, but on the whole album level, they weren't as consistent. kinda a not-quite-fully-baked thing. selling england was when they really hit their stride.

and then i went to a synch listen for foxtrot about a month ago. and the whole fucquin thing was kickass, from start to finish.

i now no longer remember why i didn't recognize that alllll those years. maybe just murky memory or growing new ears over time. maybe i confused it with nursery cryme... although now i better relisten to that one, just in case i messed it up, too.

i DO know i messed up with trespass. found that out when the box came out. apparently, i had spent almost my ENtire life confusing trespass with that debut from gen to rev album. i don't like the gen to rev album. i heard trespass on the box, and luvved its pastoral gen mode feel.

i seem to mistake many things like that over time. i was young. i was chemically-laced. who knows why, really.

the point: i need to rearrange my order for top gen album. it scares me, but it must be done. foxtrot really is that phenomenal.
