Deep Purple

I am interested in readers opinion regarding when a band should call it a day. I recently saw a Utube of the latest DP line up and though it sounded passable Gillan was struggling. I was a HUGE DP fan up until Blackmore permanently left. Yes I know he was an egotist nob but as far as I was concerned and no disrespect to Steve Morse, DP without Blackmore was like Led Zep without Page. Anyway at present Gillan, Glover & Paice are the main stayers. Unfortunately I feel DP without Lord (RIP) and Blackmore is not Deep Purple.

I saw the video from a recent festival they did in the UK (can't remember the name of it). Some songs, Gillan sounded pretty good, other songs, he was visibly struggling.

Hard to say. I'm a lifelong fan of KISS and sometimes, it pains me to hear Paul Stanley struggle with songs as well. There's another case of a band that no longer has a couple of key members but still carries on. I enjoy what I hear, but at times, I wonder if it's time for them to call it a day too.

In the end, you, as a fan, have a choice to make. listen what they are still recording and performing live, or you live with the happy memories of yesteryear and remember them when they were in top form. Either way, if you enjoy something they did, then they did something right.

^^Live is always tricky for old bands, especially the vocalists.

I can say the last DP album, "Now What?" is really really good, Gillan sounds fine although he doesn't have the pipes he did decades ago when he possessed one of the best screams in rock and roll.:D

Strange I've had "In Rock" on vinyl since I was nipper at school and the anniversary CD for a few years too now. I never, ever get tired of this album. An absolute pearl which still gets me revved up after all this time. I can't think of any better praise than it just seems to improve with age.

Well I saw DEEP PURPLE earlier this year in Brisbane Australia on a double bill with Journey (first tour downunder).

I'd seen them a few times with Steve Morse and was getting a little bored his sweep picking style. The guys a fantastic guitarist butt he loses the DP or Richie Blackmore sound at times and converts it to a tad country blues(?).
And Steves balls have shrunk now, there is no more creative juice left. The songs from the last few albums are blander so I kinda expected an average show......

WTF....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BANG....! DEEP PURPLE explodes into Fireball from the start and punches everybody in the head with every old stick of dynamite they have in their arsenal. We never recovered, it was that good, bloody good. DP ignored all the later stuff and treated us to why they are still the grooviest, heaviest, loudest surviving 70's band. I'm banging my head to Bloodsucker then boogieing to Strange Kinda Women?

Ian's voice was OK, we didn't get Child In Time butt fark me man we got an awesome show. He was cracking Monty Python styled jokes all night and made a quip about not bothering to write radio music anymore coz they won't play it anyway.

I managed to catch up with a dear friend of mine and we hugged each other at the end in celebration. We both acknowledged how much better DEEP PURPLE played this time. We just couldn't wipe the smiles from our faces. And I'm happy to have shared that moment with me mate as he shockingly died a couple weeks later.

I just seen on Amazon that on October 15th Deep Purple is releasing a live DVD from their 1984 Perfect Stranger Tour. I am looking forward to this as I seen that tour & it was phenomenal. The only bad thing about the show I seen was that the opening band... Blackfoot only played 3 songs(Gimme Gimme Gimme, Train Train, & Highway Song). They didn't seem too happy with their 20 minute set & I wasn't either. Deep Purple was so great that night. As much as Blackmore & Gillan were the main spotlight...for me Jon Lord just made the show. At that time I had never seen anyone literally rock the keyboards as he did which was unbelievable.

I saw them just after rtbuck and agree Jon Lord was amazing. I think they only did Knebworth Park in the UK around the time of Perfect Strangers but I caught them in Birmingham on the House Of Blue Light tour. Ritchie was on fire and Jon Lord rocked that stage in fact the band as a whole were spot on, a great night.

Knocking At Your Back Door, from Perfect Strangers Live

Pretty good for something from 1984 that probably wasn't a planned release.

A personal favorite since childhood with my three favorite albums being The Self Titled (1969), Come Taste the Band (1975), and Perfect Strangers (1984).
Only ever saw them once though in 2012 as I missed the last three times they came to Vancouver, the first two times because I was under age (three and eleven) the third because I wasn't aware of the show until it was too late but least I FINALLY saw them in some form.

Even two of my three tattoo pieces are Purple related!
