Asked if he ever felt the desire to reconnect with former DEEP PURPLE guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, especially in the wake of the passing of DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord in 2012, Gillan replied: "Not in the slightest. Yes, we were very much in close touch with Jon; I had dinner with him in Tokyo, I had dinner with him in Paris, we were always sending e-mails to each other, and, of course, the relationship was fantastic. Jon left the band over ten years ago, but he was still very much our personal friend and, of course, the godfather of DEEP PURPLE. As far as Ritchie was concerned, that's a different story altogether. I think we cut the thing…

"The band was dying."

He continued: "If you want to talk about Ritchie, I guess we have to; not many people do these days. But the truth of the matter is, from a historical point of view, the band was dying. If Ritchie had stayed in the band, it would have been the end of DEEP PURPLE. The shows were getting shorter and shorter, the audiences were getting smaller and smaller. We were playing in small halls, and they weren't even full — they were half empty — and Ritchie was walking off stage every night. And so, when he left 20 years ago, it stopped raining and the sun came out, and Jon Lord, amongst others, started walking up straight; his personality re-emerged. So did Roger Glover and Ian Paice; they became they were people originally, instead of fending and cowering in case they upset Ritchie. And so this situation ended, and we're all glad it ended, and we had to rebuild. And, of course, now the distance of time is so great that we just remember the good times. And we remember Ritchie as a great player, a great performer, a great writer, and I remember him as my roommate; I used to share rooms with him. But something happened with Ritchie, and that's the end of that. So we remember the past as it was; it was completely and totally different to Jon Lord.

"And so, no, I have no desire to pick up the phone to Ritchie, or have dinner with him, or meet him in Paris or Tokyo. I hope he's well, and I hope he's happy. And that's the end of it."

Thanks for posting. It's sad that is the way Ian feels, but totally understandable. And he wasn't a dick about it. I had hoped that there may be some form of reunion for a Jon Lord tribute concert, but I feel I may be looking at it from a selfish point of a view, rather than as the celebration that Jon deserves.

It's sad it came to this. But I've heard Ritchie came be hard to get along with. I respect Ian's opinion on this matter. I seen DP on the Battle Rages On tour. It was terrible for the last 30 minutes of the show. Ritchie was so disengaged with the band.

The album was enough to convince me (a seasoned Purple fan of two decades - at that time) that the band weren't worth going to see on that tour. It's a stinker of an album - I'd rather listen to Slaves and Masters!

Maybe this is why Richie only plays with his wife now in a band setting.

Yeah it is sad but at least Ian was honest about it without being too hostile or disrespectful to Richie. He simply doesn't care for him and doesn't want to be around him. I felt that way about my brother for a while and there's other people I feel that way about and I'm sure they feel that way about me too. That's life. This sort of reminds me of the relationship between Ronnie James Dio and the guitarist Vivian Campbell who now plays with Def Leppard. Those guys hated each other also.

Richie always seems calm and happy now (unless it's a front) since he's been with Candice and Blackmore's Night. I like the music also. I dunno....just seems like a nice guy to be around these days.

He doesn't strike me at all as the same man that once played in Deep Purple or Rainbow.

great post...yeah, If I was Gillan, I wouldn't want to re-connect with the "banjo player" either..I've seen a few DP docos/interviews and to a tee they all say that Ritchie was a dick, all band members have very few pleasant things to say about Blackmore...Lordy had told the tale of chasing Ritchie back to the dressing room just to get him to play "Smoke" as an encore...I can attest to the fact that he didnt look to f**kin enthused on the Perfect Strangers tour at the Sydney show....I hear tell that he didnt even make an attempt to send commisserations to Paice and the wives after Lordys passing...great guitar player, miserable human being

Maybe he's the Sheldon Cooper of guitar players and just has no compassion or feelings towards others.
