Metallica
Judas Priest
Slayer
Iron Maiden
Quiet Riot

In about that order. If I considered M.O.D./S.O.D. metal, than they would take a number 2 or 3 spot. I must have listened to USA For MOD 5 or 6 hundred times, and wore out a few tapes doing it. It was also the first lp I learned to play along with at 15 when I started playing guitar. There was just so much GREAT metal then that looking back, it's hard to pick favorites. It would be easier to pick bands that I didn't like. My taste was heavily influenced by my next door neighbor who was a drummer in a few bands that practiced out of his parents garage. We hated pop metal with a passion. I still don't know how Nirvana wormed their way in and took over that year of my life.

...Thunder, Celtic Frost, Queensryche, Iron Maiden and Sabbath to name but a few and Metallica remain for me the very best of the 80's .....many more listened to along the way.....

I know this place is hurtin' for contributing members & everybody is entitled to an opinion, bla bla bla....

But if Poison is now considered Heavy Metal (the best, no less), please someone shoot me & get it over with. :bonk:

:eek:hyeah:
They're just a different kind of Metal. They're quite simply just not the deep, dark, thrashy, slashy, menacing, intricate Metal that most long time Heavy Metal fans would consider Metal. Poison's basically the bombastic, flashy, trashy, exuberant, bright (not dark) light version of it. I like them somewhat but definitely know that Ratt and Cinderella were a lot heavier and more Metal than Poison ever was or is. Even Motley Crue was heavier but that doesn't make them bad or anything. To each his own. Now back to the Metal!:D

I don't know if anyone's listed them yet but W.A.S.P. definitely deserves an honorable mention here.:grinthumb

I don't consider Metallica, Overkill, or Slayer heavy metal. The best heavy metal band of the 80's was Iron Maiden. I love Judas Priest but Turbo and Ram It Down really tarnished their greatness.

I know Judas Priest and Black Sabbath really started it all and for some it might just end there, but I wouldn't say that Metallica wasn't a Metal band. Just listen to Albums like "Kill 'Em All", "Master Of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All" and try to say that that's still not Metal. Do you still believe that they weren't? Maybe nowadays you can call them a different Genre, but back when they were "cookin'", they were definitely Metal in my mind. I feel that Megadeth was/is more superior and aggressive of a Metal band, but they both shook the Metal world up in the '80s and '90s. To each his own though.

Metallica in the 80's was as metal as any band in history. Slayer as well (even though I'm not a fan, I can acknowledge their place in metal history) was and still is quite metal.

As for Judas Priest's Turbo and Ram It Down, I love both of those albums with all of my being. While I know they aren't on the level of their epic albums, British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance (and personally I think that Defenders was also pretty damn epic), they are still very good in their own right.
