Nice to hear some kind words about post-Ian Mott. I love the classic stuff, especially the last three albums but I also freakin' adore the Mott albums. Especially Shouting & Pointing. It's a shame the band imploded so quickly. The energy & hooks on the final album are off the rails. I would've killed to see them onstage in the US back in the day.

Former Mott the Hoople Guitarist and Singer Steve Hyams Dead

Guitarist and singer Steve Hyams, who briefly worked with British rockers Mott the Hoople, has passed away at the age of 62 after battling heart problems for years.

Hyams got his start in 1971 with a band called Dolls House, then went on to perform with the Samuel Prody Band before launching a solo career. His 1974 debut album, ‘Mistaken Identities,’ featured Wings drummer Denny Seiwell. He had been friends with the members of Mott the Hoople for years when he came on board, working with them on six tracks in 1977 that were later released as ‘World Cruise.’

“Steve Hyams worked in a record store on the Kings Road – the Chelsea Drug Store – when Mott The Hoople started in 1969,” Mott front man Ian Hunter recalled (quote via Classic Rock magazine). “We soon found him to be an astute listener and his taste was faultless. Later on, he got into music and he’s done some seriously good stuff. I would have been really happy if Steve would have taken my place after Mott the Hoople finished in 1974. He was unique. Steve’s one that got away.”

Hyams went on to release a second solo album titled ‘Feather and a Tomahawk’ in 1997.

“Steve was a tremendously talented writer and musician,” Mott the Hoople biographer Campbell Devine said. “He was also passionate, humorous and sensitive – a very charming and thoughtful man.”

Don't know much about Steve, but this is another of his musical generation passing on, and much too young.

You have to get the feeling the lifestyle of musicians leads to an early death, I'm sure statistics would bear that out if we dug into it deeper.

:rip: Steve.

I've recently finished reading Ian Hunter's Diary of a Rock and Roll Star, a cracking read, the guy certainly has a way with words.
I think it also gave a plausible and realistic image for the band themselves, they didn't just shag and snort their way through the tour, they worked their balls off through bad gigs, troubled flights, dodgy people, and managed to squeeze in some fun along the way.
I love the bit near the end when Ian drunkenly stumbles into Elvis Presley's place and gets turned away by the house staff, and Ian's just thrilled to have got THAT far.
Anyone else read it?

Yes, I have an original paperback imprint from 1974 (which I bought at the time). I had to buy a new copy a few years ago because the pages were falling out of the original!

Curiously, I have lived in Aylesbury for the past 25 years and, when I came to reread it some years ago, I discovered from the intro pages that the original was printed by Hazell, Watson & Viney in the town. Sadly, HW&V have long since gone to the great publishers in the sky and the site is now a Tesco Extra - although they've kept the outer walls around the car park, which have the Hazell, Watson & Viney name in two foot high letters in a kind of mosaic.

Anyway, that's an aside. Great book. I've read it several times and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the music scene of the 70s.

Support band for the o2 Arena gig in London in November is no less than Marillion!

And as of today, it isn't.

Marillion have announced that they have withdrawn from the support slot for Mott The Hoople, due to being misled by the promoters.

Damn it! That would have been a great double header. I was really looking forward to that.
