Geoff Barton is Classic Rock's Editor at Large.

In I guess 1978 he wrote a review of Rush's Farewell to Kings in Sounds that, even as a 12 year old, made me go out and buy the record, and it changed the whole way I felt about music. He then did the same thing with the first Van Halen album in the same year. A lot of bands actually owe him a debt of gratitude as he broke them in the UK long before anyone had heard of them in the USA. I hope he's well and still writing good stuff and spotting new talent.

He started doing podcasts a few years ago which introduced me to various groups, including Electric Mary. After a layoff, he is back with this one on the excellent Snakecharmer (Laurie Wisefield and Micky Moody):

Thanks :grinthumb I guess this thread has quickly gone from One Direction into the wrong direction, as happens, but it's worth it to get Geoff Barton's stuff out there.

That is quite a list, don't think I've ever heard of One Direction before.

They will fade in no time like all the other boy bands before them.

My only problem with One Direction is that they are a Simon Cowell creation...and as such they are totally contrived. I don't find their music any more offensive than the music of any other combo aimed specifically at the young girls/kids market, they weren't created for the gratification of members of the Barclay James Harvest Fan Club, so that would be a bit like me getting all bent out of shape by Thomas the Tank Engine, or Power Rangers Super Samurai video games. I'd be interested out of curiosity to know what % of their record/ticket sales go to Cowell and his company, and what % goes to the band members, especially since our daughter loves them, and so Cowell gets some of it from me and my wife.

I don't have any interest in manufactured product from the Disney or Cowell factory floor and never have in all the yeas I've enjoyed music.

I understand the marketing genius behind it all, and it is all about money not the art that is why they all fade into obscurity as the newer model with racing stripes and fresh paint rolls off the assembly line. Young girls drive the market and if they enjoy it all the power to them.

Me I was playing Steppenwolf, Deep Purple and other good bands when I was that age.:hb:

Man, 2 years ago I would have been livid about these guys existing, but at this point I don't really care. They'll be forgotten in a year and another mega-popular superstar will take their place, and the cycle continues. All I can do is laugh.
