Excellent band Soot, I have "Axe Victim" and it's a great album. Bill Nelson is an exceptional musician.

Bill Nelson moved with the times.....after Be Bop Deluxe.....came the quirky new wave RED NOISE that fitted in with bands like XTC and WIRE at the time
My personal favourite Bill Nelson musical era was his solo stuff from 82 "the love that whirls" and "chimera" albums. Bill was using synths and drum machines, often with an oriental musical touch to it. Absolutely brilliant!!
It was strange that Bill never went back to his Be Bop Deluxe "rock" roots .As "ANGRY-MAN" says he went very arty
I saw a solo gig by him in the 80s.....there was no vocals just Bill by himself with a" real to real" as backing and him playing sustained guitar [e-bow].....it was good.....but....[frustrating]
There always has been a massive demand for a BE BOP DELUXE reunion, but sadly I cant see it happening :wa

I really like that one Lou! They translated well from the 70's to the 80's for sure! :grinthumb

Sox, I thought for sure I uncovered a 70's band nobody had covered here yet! I never would have thought the thread would be hiding in Progressive but gfrom the short period I've been listening to them tonight I can tell they covered a ton of ground genre wise! :cheers2

Happy to see this thread since I was way into the band and especially Bill Nelson's great guitar sound.

My BBD vinyls...
Axe Victim - 1974 (import)
Futurama - 1975
Sunburst Finish - 1976
Modern Music - 1976
Live In The Air Age - 1977 (LP and 12" EP)
Drastic Plastic - 1978

I also have a Bill Nelson solo LP called Northern Dreams from 1971. I recall it being kind of folksy on some songs but other songs featured the guitar sound that he perfected later in BBD.

Thanks for the info L/R.
It was one of my mail order purchases back in the seventies. It's on a label called Smile records and has a very simple cover that is open at the top and right side with the bottom folded up so the record doesn't fall out.
There are three other musicians but Nelson is credited with vocals, harmony vocals, acoustic guitars, lead guitars, bottleneck guitar, bass guitar, flutes, recorder and drums on one track.
It is in mint condition and I can only recall playing it one time.

I vaguely recall this band had some sorta hit single here in the UK back in the mid/late 1970s BUT wot really makes me smile about this band is a story told to me by a rock-friend of mine that use to work in a independent record shop here in London about 20 years ago of a 'fanatical' Be Bop Deluxe fan that use to frequent my rock-friend's record shop most days of the week talking about this band to anyone and everyone who went into the shop.

Apparently my rock-friend made the big mistake of not taking the Be Bop Deluxe guy to seriously when in conversation with him about said band only for this guy to leave the record shop and to stand across the street opposite the record shop nearly everyday for a fortnight making 'threatening stares' at my friend while he was working in the shop!!.

Crazy!!. :oyea:

^^^Did a little research and the single "Ships In The Night" was probably the single you refer to.
The research also turned up some facts that I did not know about the band.
Nelson dissolved the band after Axe Victim and put together a new lineup for Futurama and later albums.
Bill Nelson never liked the comparison to Bowie (but, what can you do).
Ten years after the band broke up the bassist, Paul Jeffreys was on the Pan Am flight that was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland.
