GN'R, Metallica, AC/DC, Def Leppard were among the best. But I must say, the 80's were also probably the last decade of proper Hard Rock...

Not sure why politics was brought up to blame any lack luster musical styles ??????? I will say this I didn't like the whole glam metal scene but that really started out in the 70's with glitter rock and I didn't like dance pop but that was just the 80's version of disco which btw was anything but conservative and had its roots in black funk music. If the 80's were really to blame for producing a lack luster "musical" genre it sure wasn't white bread conservatives because rap was anything but. And I will end it with this after grunge and alternative took over in the mid 90's like disco took over the 70's I quit complaining about glam metal. Still sitting here confused about this thread.:wtf: Is 80's un fair bashing still happening in 2013, I thought that trend was over ???????:wtf:

Also the term..."hair metal" always confused me because metal and hard rock period was known for the cliche of having long hair. And I didn't know glam metal/rock spewed conservative and christian lyrics ???? So girls girls girls was about what then ?????????? And silly me I didn't know tipper gore was a republican ????????:wtf:

Somehow my memory of the 80's seems to contradict the stereotypes and stigma of the trendy 90's 80's bashing fad. Maybe that's because many who were doing that were too young to remember the 80's that well and didn't get out much except for the weekend trip to the mall with their parents credit cards.

What nearly destroyed rock was Disco Vomit - it was a 70s creation.

The 80s thankfully killed off that abomination and rock began a slow recovery. The 80s get a bad rap - all I have to remember is John Travolta and leisure suits.
:cheers2 Somebody with experience, a good memory, and some sense. Thank you.

Every band I really liked down to the very last one either quit or produced sub par stuff in the 80s. Now, it started off very strong with Maiden and ok Rush albums, Accept etc. but even these guys caved into either corporate jingleism or plain old bad taste.

I personally think MTV is almost single handedly to blame for how bad 80s drek was. The crap they promoted started off as niche music but became mainstream and seemed to suck the life out of just about everything else in it's path. Never before was image so far more important than substance than in the 80s up until today.

Grunge seemed to be a step back towards band driven rock but that didn't last either.

There are definitely some shining exceptions but as a whole...decline began in the 80s and the depths it sunk to make even the crappiest disco seem palatable by comparison.

WTF's with all this talk about 80s being a bad decade in music!?
Along with the '70s, by far the best era of pop & rock music.

I desagree, the 60' and the 70' were the best decades, in the 80' disco music rap and comercial glam made pop/rock music fall in a hole and then in 90' it recovered with grunge and bands like oasis, blur, red hot, radiohead, etc (you may say that many of these **** started in the 80' which is true, but they didnt get much difussion till the 90') to fall again in the 00´and noww i guess its recovering again eith bands like the strokes, the flaming lips, artic monkeys, tame impala, etc

You didn't like Crimson's stuff in the 80s or just forgot them?

I went to one of the first live shows around the time of the King Crimson 'come-back' and Discipline. I couldn't wait, but was massively disappointed. They were an entirely different band, sounding more like Talking Heads, and should not have used the name. The crowd called for 21st Schizoid Man, but just got something from the Wetton era. Robert Fripp is an excellent guitarist, but his demeanor on stage was a bit odd.

It's a fact that some bands let you down. I was one of the people to walk out of an early Motorhead show and I was a fan of Hawkwind with Lemmy.

Compared to anything before it 80s Crimso was definitely a huge let down. But I like Belew both as a singer (at times) and a guitarist especially his complimentary work with Fripp. Had I been a big fan before I heard the 80s stuff (for some reason no one I knew owned any Crimson albums) I might have felt the same way you do. I guess I was 'lucky' enough to come late to the party. That said, every album after Discipline was progressively worse until Three of a Perfect Pair which is the very last Crimson album I care for at all.

It's funny you should mention walking out on an early Motorhead show. My brother did the exact same thing.
