^ You make a good point, Anthem. I am sure I've upset a few thrash fans here, as it does seem like speed over melody, or heavy rock with punk rock elements. Unlike you, I've probably also upset the Iron Maiden fans here too as I don't like them (Maiden, not the fans). I feel a bit guilty, as my taste rarely takes a bashing here (unlike on other forums). On the subject of Iron Maiden, when he was with White Spirit, Janick Gers showed that he was as good as any guitar player. Ian Gillan later appointed him for good reason.

In the very early metallica days they called themselves speed metal and so did the critics and so forth but over time as they started obviously over reaching their musical abilities and the music started to sound choppy as in radically jumping from one part to another as though one song abruptly ended and another began immediately but it was still the same song which imo was a poor way to attempt time signature changes. I'm not a musical expert by a long shot but it seams to me that they would leave out a few notes in a sequence that helps to bridge one part into another and that is called arpeggio ? which is a proper componant of music to well, be music.

Another thing was the way them and other bands started "thrashing" the fret rather than play through the notes properly as what seems to me a short cut on "playing" something. Once this became the standard those types of bands dropped the speed metal label along with critics and so forth and they were then labeled "thrash" as in literally thrashing a guitar fret thus this is why it seems to me as what I've said before which is a garage band attempt to play speed or epic metal and more complex stuff. Thus because of the aforementioned reasons thrash metal was born.

I'm not downing everything as I've mentioned along with a couple of others megadeth seems to have at least try to progress on it and I've heard a couple of new thrash bands that sound decent but for the most part thrash is a substandard form of "music". I don't mean to flame and hope nobody takes what I've said personal because I'm just giving my "opinion" on a music genre no more no less.

Thrash metal is never really meant to be as complex as people think it should. It is supposed to be fast, furious music for those fans who happen to enjoy that style tempo. There are different bands in thrash who do it more technical too like Megadeth being one of them. Peace Sells album is an example of thrash done on a technical front where pretty much everything is supposed to serve the song and the solo matches what music they have in the rhythm section. Rust In Peace is another where its not just mindless thrash riffing it is done with precision and same applies with the Metallica albums although they did tend to be more on the speedy side of things they still were doing this a similar way. Not flaming, just disagreeing that thrash is substandard but to me it is far from a substandard form of music. Maybe its not to your liking which is fair but many people do like it because they consider it to be a really great musical genre like myself.

I don't think you can name a whole sub-genre a substandard form of music. When you don't like a subgenre just tell us you don't like the majority of that subgenre. Don't put it down like that. Sure there are poor thrash bands around but there are also many that master their instruments.

As you name Metallica's early music choppy, what about Master of Puppets? That album is far from choppy. I saw them many times live during that period and they were tight as hell. Even the very early songs sounded great.

You pretty much agreed with me on the technical quality of much of the thrash subgenre and I did give megedeth some props along with saying some new so called thrash bands have taken the genre and progressed a bit. I also never said I was against fast or furious music and as a matter of fact posted that I do by even naming certain bands as examples which means I was trying to say as you've admitted much of thrash's popularity was based more on their speed and how heavy they were over anything else.

Just read my previous reply. And this again is nothing personal but just my assessment on a genre of music is all and arguing or debating is obviously not going to change anyones mind in which I wasn't even trying but again just giving a viewpoint on a genre of music is all. Btw I've never been bias about music I don't try to down something because I don't like it but dislike something because of objective things that I've mentioned before.
