I'm not sure if this should go in to the 70's (or 80's) section but Pekka Pohjola has always been one of my favourites when it comes to progressive rock. Atleast the record "Mathematician's Air Display" or "Keesojen lehto" as we know it in Finland, has influenced my taste of music quite heavily.

Here is a tune from that album: Pekka Pohjola - Mathematicians' air display

Also there was a great finnish progressive band called 'Kingston wall'. They made (I think) 3 albums and were pretty damn impressive at live gigs. Unfortunately the guitarist Petri Walli had some issues with drugs and the legend tells that he jumped from a roof of a church while on a LSD-trip..

Here is a cover of Jimi Hendrix's Fire, played by Kingston Wall.

Their own material is a bit more psychedelic so be sure to check that out too if you're interested.

With lovers, buggers, & thieves.
^ Actually, you may like Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson is a guitarist, singer, and creative force of the band. A tasteful mix of acoustic and electric guitar, synths are mainly for effect, great leads, extremly talented band. You should listen to the whole song, as their songs go through different tempos and moods. Here are some suggestions:

"Always Never" (1993)

"Waiting Phase One" (1996)

"Even Less" (1999)

"Blackest Eyes" (2002)

"Deadwing" (2005)

"Sentimental" (2007)

"Time Flies" (2009)

Older great prog rock bands include yes, rush, and queensryche. Newer bands include mobrules, ivory tower, and the quiet room.

Focus are a great prog band and one of my faves, you can't co wrong with their albums even the later stuff is good.

Atomic Rooster are also excellent, all their albums, the only one you have to watch is, "Homework" which has demos on it, there are a few songs on it that are worth the money as they were released as singles and you can tell with the production:)
