David Bowie has announced his first new album in 10 years.

Titled 'The Next Day', the album has been produced by Bowie's longtime collaborator Tony Visconti and will be released in the UK and most countries worldwide on March 11. Australia will get the albums three days earlier on March 8, while American fans will have to wait until March 12.

The album's standard edition contains 14 tracks with the 'Deluxe Version' adding three more. Both are available to pre-order on iTunes now.

To mark the album announcement, which comes on the day of his 66th birthday (January 8, 2013), Bowie has released its first single immediately. Titled 'Where Are We Now?', the track is available for download on iTunes now. You can watch the single's video, directed by New York artist Tony Oursler, by scrolling down to the bottom of this article and clicking 'play'.

The song is a stately ballad whose lyrics reference Bowie's Berlin years. He mentions several Berlin landmarks including Potsdamer Platz, a square in the city centre, and KaDeWe, the city's most famous department store. The chorus goes: "Where are we now? Where are we now? The moment you know, you know you know."

Bowie's last album, 'Reality', was released in 2003 and he wrapped up his most recent tour in 2004 after he fell ill. In recent years, the singer has kept a remarkably low profile, something which the album announcement on his official website acknowledged.

The announcement reads: "In recent years radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumour and wishful thinking ....a new record...who would have ever thought it, who'd have ever dreamed it! After all David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants...when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say."

The full tracklisting for 'The Next Day' is as follows:

'The Next Day'
'Dirty Boys'
'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)'
'Love Is Lost'
'Where Are We Now?'
'Valentine's Day'
'If You Can See Me'
'I'd Rather Be High'
'Boss Of Me'
'Dancing Out In Space'
'How Does The Grass Grow'
'(You Will) Set The World On Fire'
'You Feel So Lonely You Could Die'
'Heat'

Deluxe Version bonus tracks

'So She'
'I'll Take You There'
'Plan'

Follow the link to the NME page and the video is on there to watch. Not sure if where you are in the World affects viewing though.

I didn't realize he was sick...and just assumed he'd retired from the music business for good.

Nice to see he's feeling good again, but I am a fan of his 70's and early 80's albums more than anything he's done since. And I won't be downloading anything from i-tunes, no surprise there.;) I am sick and tired of these staggered release dates, and the "Bonus tracks" available on a deluxe CD just release the whole damned album in one shot please and thank you...if there is even going to be a CD released.:dunno:

He was ill after I saw him at the Isle of Wight festival, I think he had a heart condition or something and stiopped touring. I agree with LG, stop this special edition stuff and just release the album. I have heard a bit of the new single and it is a slow one. I still prefer his older stuff so probably will leave this one.:tc:

Saw Bowie at the same Isle of Wight show in 2004. Brilliant.

I think the single is a bit on the lame side . It got played on the radio back to back with "Jean Genie" , which just reminded me how GOOD Bowie was in his day......
Good to see Bowie back.

I actually like "Where Are We Now?" a lot more than "Jean Genie" though I've always found that to be a heavily overrated song in Bowie's catalog anyway...

Where Are We Now reminds me of David Bowie's early eighties material (Baal's Hymn, Wild is the Wind), in that it is slow, melancholy and a bit weird. I like it as I did the material of thirty years ago. I came to David Bowie through Starman and Ch-Ch-Changes, but I think The Man Who Sold the World is probably his best album. Like everyone else, I assumed David Bowie had quietly faded away, so I am looking forward to the new album.
