Dude, you make a great point on how some karaoke mixes are horrible chopping up songs, leaving parts out, changing arrangements. It can really throw you off. As far as music taste I'm not so sure of that. It doesn't bother me what people sings as long as they are having fun with it. Then again if the overall crowd sings primarily country and the same old classic rock songs which is inevitable in my hick area then it can get to be a pain.
I just get annoyed when they put on, say, 10 ABBA songs in a row. I don't mind ABBA, but I like a bit of variety. Otherwise, just say "We're having an ABBA Karaoke night" so I know what I'm in for.
I'm picking on ABBA here, but it can work for another artist. I tend to argue for the rule of "no more that one song per artist", but people always veto it because they want to sing both "We Are The Champions" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" at some point (seriously, if anyone's ever been to a karaoke night where Bohemian Rhapsody hasn't appeared, please let me know. It seems to be a requirement).
