i just bought a pioneer blu-ray player because i can play sacds on it.
[only have one so far, dark side of the moon.
a lot of the albums i want don't seem to of been released in that format.
i wish i could find the best place to buy them from.]

i also have a pair of huge, old, onkyo speakers and an old kenwood amp from the seventies.

i also have a denon receiver but its crap, i hate it!
i think receivers are great for tv and dvds but not so good for playing music thru, imo. that is why i got hold of the old stereo amp, its much better and nice and bassy, which the denon isn't.

^^I've noticed that too BP, my new Marantz is excellent for movies/surround sound, but when it comes to listening to music my old Yamaha CA-810 is so much better for depth/imaging/warmth it's not even close, and it was built in 1979. I am going to take it into one of the local shops here and get the power supply upgraded and the capacitors replaced, then it will last me the rest of my lifetime easily.

^Good move on using a stereo amp instead of the receiver. Usually, a standalone amp will achieve better results than an integrated one. Not having to share a power supply is the biggest key as to performance. Once I went the separates route, I've never looked back...

^^I wish there was a local place where I can have a knowledgeable technician to fine tune my gear like you Bruce. Like autos, they could use some sort of an overhaul for maintenance.

So I received the Beldens yesterday. I measured the lenghts I would need and stripped the ends prepping them for the locking banana connectors [to the MLs] I am supposed to receive this Thursday. I'm using regular bananas for the amp since there is no possibility of them slipping off. It is legit 10 gauge...a bit of work due to its thickness.

Any unit built specifically for two channel use would sound better than a combo audio/video receiver at least the entry to mid-price level. Really like the old fashioned needle meters...

Man that's a nice piece of equipment! I could sit and watch the needles bounce about all day.

Matched with my old MK IV's it sounds...stunningly good especially since I added my dedicated phono stage preamp. Also I can use the pre-amp out and use a more powerful amp if I want, or the opposite and disconnect the preamp and use it as a power amp. Very useful features which is one of the reasons I bought it, well I used to have the CA 1010 but I sold it decades ago and wished I never did.:wa

And CREAM'd I agree I love watching the power meters when I'm listening to an album, it's right on the coffee table in front of me for now until I finish my upgrade cycle.:D

i bought my old amp on ebay, there are heaps of vintage ones there. actually i also bought a pair of sony tower speakers from there as well, at the ridiculous price of $60! i was the only bidder in the end so they were a big bargain. the guy also delivered them too, a 120 km trip for him.
i use them for the plasma.

^^There are a lot of good deals for vintage equipment on e-bay but there is also a risk. So far I've been lucky everything I've bought used has been in good condition, except one old Marantz receiver. The owner must have been a chain smoker because this was the smelliest audio component I've ever seen. I literally took it apart and left the case in the garage for 6 months to get rid of the stench. It needs a tune-up but I think I'll just sell it or give to a guy here who rebuilds/fixes old equipment. Since I got the Yamaha I won't use the Marantz anymore.
