I'm a pretty big Who fan, and what I really like is how they can take a story and make a fabulous album out of it. Quadrophenia is my favorite, but I also have every album between Tommy and Who Are You. I never really got into the early stuff, I mean, My Generation is a great song, but it's just the early 60s pop regurgitated over and over. Quadrophenia isn't the best album for people getting into the band (which I don't think you are, you're more of a casual fan), and I'd suggest Who's Next for you. If concept albums don't interest you, it's the perfect album IMO (despite the fact that it was born out of a concept album...). It sounds like the Who (or at least how I think of them), when Roger sounds like the Roger I think of when I think of the Who. Townshend is the cheesy (I mean, he DOES get a bit repetitive), crazy guy you love, and Moon, is well....Moon, and Entwistle is solid.

Tommy? It's still hanging onto the 60s (though it was the first Who album I got into), and it doesn't show what The Who can really do together.

So look at Who's Next another time and see what you think. Or look up Lifehouse and pick up the jist of the story, and it takes on a more powerful meaning to me (which is what I really love. That feeling of perfection at the high time of a rock opera. You feel it during See Me Feel Me, This Song is Over, and Love Reign o'er Me. Powerful, and it really speaks to me).

I have long thought that The Who are very, very overrated. Not to say they were a terrible band, but I just never understood the reason so many people love them. Who's Next is a very solid album (easily their best in my opinion) but other than that, i only like a handful of tunes. By handful, I mean if I had to pick a Top 20 list from the Who, I don't think I could. Top 10 I can, top 15, maybe. 20? Nah, I just can't.

I also don't like anything they did in the 60's. The 70's was definitely more palatable to my ears than their earlier work.

I agree with Architect in this discussion, I like the Who fine but they are not in my top 20 bands of all time.

Who's Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia, The Who By Numbers, Who Are You and then Live At Leeds.

I've never heard the Isle of Wight concert so I can't comment on it,,,perhaps I should check it out.

I've got the IOW DVD. It's unbelievable.

The Who are amazing, not one of my favourite bands but incredible live and Who's Next is genius.

looking at the bands you already like, i recommend the first queen lp. those were the days when they were considered a heavy rock band.
plus their second one as well, my favourite.

with some bands you just had to be there way back then to appreciate them. the who made a big impact on music in the sixties, they were very powerful.
however if you've not followed them that much, you just won't 'get it.'
i've never really liked them myself but i'd never consider they were overrated just because they're not my cuppa tea.
they were an amazing group for a very long time, each member being excellent at what he had to do, especially john entwhistle.
in the sixties pete's guitar playing and sound was very powerful, and made a huge impression on music fans.

plus theres that whole mod thing too.

Only got 3 albums myself. Who's Next, Sell Out and Who Are You which I found to be decent. Sell Out not quite as consistent but had some good songs. I need to youtube some songs off their other albums.

Yes I agree with all that BP, and I will also add the Who were pioneers when it came to "cranking up the volume" at live shows, other bands soon followed suit because as mentioned the Who on album and the Who live on stage were two completely different animals.

There's lots of tracks by the Who that I really love and play a lot. A good compilation is long overdue unless there is already one that I'm not aware of.
