^You're right about what you stated. It is just a different era then. Now with a HUGE media availability through the internet and TV promotion is expansive. There is so much competition as far as genres and artists that saturation becomes heavy with loads of opportunities and angles to use. It becomes sensory overload. Back in the 1970's it was huge billboards such as the one along Sunset Strip and radio stations.

Led Zeppelin weren't a singles band, could be very loud and in the beginning were very hairy :heheh:

Of the 4 bands listed in the opening post my order of preference is:

1. The Rolling Stones
2. Led Zeppelin
3. The Who
4. The Beatles

I'm a big fan of all 4 though. The Who and The Stones I've seen live. I don't listen to whole albums by the Who or The Beatles - just selected cuts like a personal best of. But the first 5 Zeppelin albums are almost untouchable. The same with The Stones albums.

I don't know about what other people think but for me I'd take the Stones or the Beatles over Zeppelin any day.

For one, I hear more of Zeppelin on the radio more than either of the other two. Secondly, they have, as I see it, a certain widespread popularity with a majority of their songs. What I mean is that everyone everywhere can name Stairway to Heaven on a list, and any rock fan can listen to any song of their songs and name it instantly.

In short, they are just so utterly overplayed....

Promotion is a big deal for me. You see bands like led zep and nirvana and the plasmastics when they were underground / not established, then they have an un-corporate, non advertised breakthrough album that shakes the community in a way no one thought possible... not to make this a pop thing, but im tired of well-established artists promoting the living hell out of their 4th or 5th albums, having it chart well and then people say: man, he/she is changing the face of music". Lady Gaga's born this way is case and point... 9 radio appearances, 3 guest interviews on tv, posters and online ads EVERYWHERE, album sales next to cashiers, selling it for 99 cents the first day, then they talk about how massively popular it is, charting well and huge sales, and it just shakes me to my core... of course if you sell al albums at a dollar, next to cash registers, after promoting it absolutely everywhere, the album will sell... the real artists didnt need any of that, they used their talents and the material spoke for itself. Its cliche, but todays music is desensitizing people/teens to music :( (sorry that ran long, needed to vent somewhere, although its old news im sure)

Promotion really is the key to HUGE album sales. That's why I'm sooo excited when I see current bands like NIghtwish do well , and now having a movie come out...as it's been word of mouth for bands like them here in America for years.

Too busy promoting the hell out of Kelly Clarkson still. Not saying anything BAD about her...fine singer...but you know what I mean.

Where exactly as you implying that Zeppelin doesn't get the attention of the other bands mentioned?

In the UK. From what I have read so far, they are much loved in the US, but in the UK, considered retro.

if the beatles hadn't split up i'm sure the beatles and zep would have had a few misses too.

I don't know. The Beatles have their own top 100 songs list. How many songs, can one band make. They're still human :D

As for Zep, 10 years is still a long time.

The three bands you compared Zeppelin to were huge components of the original British Invasion so there is considerable nostalgia attached to them. They were not amongst the second wave made up of "heavies" that came after...who let's just say aren't musically respected.

One thing I found interesting about Zeppelin's beginning, according to the Richard Coles book "Stairway To Heaven" When Zeppelin started out, their home country shunned them and the critics had a hay day with them for years.
Although the fans enjoyed them, they were way more famous in America. That's why they toured over here for so many years before they finally started to be recognized in their own country.

THAT'S IT THERE. I don't understand, why over here, they're not mainstreamed. Even Donny Osmand, was on TV more, while I was growing up. I would have thought, being English, they would get unadulterated appreciation.

Led Zepp, is a band that has to be researched. VH1 Classic's didn't play them much either.

Did they bad-mouth Britain in an interview or something?

Then why are Queen, held to a higher standard.

The idea, that The Beatles/Stones where more, commercial, I understand. However, Zepp, being so successful, Britain should be praising from the roof tops.

Over here, if a Brit, does well.......we never here the end of it :D
