^^I agree with you about most bands just have a collection of songs on their albums, but when it comes to the classic rock records I grew up with I cannot skip or change the order, I have to listen to them the way they were on the vinyl album in proper sequence. Yeah I'm OCD when it comes to that.

I can't imagine anyone mixing up DSOTM, it would lose coherency to me it was specifically designed to be played in order.

That made me smile when I read it Architect.:)

One thing about dinosaurs like myself...:D...we grew up with vinyl albums and playing them in order was just natural. I never got up and skipped a track when I was listening to a record, sure some songs were better than others but generally speaking artists adapted very well to the 40 minute time restrictions on a record you didn't get nearly as much "filler" as you do on a 70+ minute CD nowadays. Although CD's are going extinct too, within 5 years everything will be dowloaded/digital copies only from music to movies and games. Can't say I'm happy about that either.

Anyway, it's become a habit for me, even now the only CD's I mess around with when it comes to order are compilations otherwise I play the albums from beginning to end in order always.

I am pleased to see younger people getting into Pink Floyd even if they are "cherry picking" favorite songs off their old classic albums.;)

Ah, so that's what he meant with that comment ^^
But ah well, I downloaded the albums that were missing, and I've made a new playlist where I put all the songs from all the albums in chronological order. So I can just listen to them all, without using shuffle this time.

I don't really have so much space left on my 2nd generation ipod touch though :)

I think there are certain bands one can just listen to songs because that's how their albums are put together: just collections of songs. They don't tell a story or evoke a certain mood or atmosphere. Pink Floyd is not one of those bands, nor is Rush for example.

Led Zeppelin III is one of those albums for me I have to listen to the whole thing start to finish. It just evokes a warm summer day to me, lazing in a field somewhere in rural England. (not that I've ever been to England but LZIII would be my soundtrack to that scene)

But AC/DC, Queen, The Doors, ZZ Top, etc. give me a greatest hits collection and I'll be fine. :)

Perfect! I agree! That is one album I can't really just play songs at random from. The only song that seems out of place on it is Since I've Been Loving You. I can't break up DSOTM either. I think it's an insult to what the band was trying to create to try to do it. Usually even the radio stations will play a couple of songs from it together too.

Breathe and Us & Them are two songs I single out a lot on that album. Generally the flow works better if I listen right through but those 2 are easy for me to enjoy individually. I don't usually like to single out tracks but a lof of the time when I do its those 2 tracks.

Yeah, Since I've Been Loving You seems like they slipped back into the hard blues thing. Maybe it would have been more appropriate on either of their first 2 albums. III is my favorite LZ album mostly cause it's so different from all their other stuff. Love Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp!

For Pink Floyd, The albums before Dark Side are easier for me to break up into favorite songs. DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and The Wall were all meant to be listened to from start to finish. They all have a theme and a flow that can't be achieved by listening to them any other way.

I'm not a fan of their earlier work either, even though I do own them. I listened to all of their albums start to finish over the course of a couple days once. It was interesting to say the least.

Oh, I'm a huge fan of their early work. In fact, I prefer it to their 70's "classic period" output.
I'm just saying as opposed to the pre Dark Side albums, the early Floyd is a bit more meandering and less cohesive than the albums from 1973- 1979, and and you really can pick and choose the great stuff, which is about 95% of it to me. :D

^^I have nothing but respect for my fellow "Floydian" fan, but Pink Floyd was at it's best from Meddle to The Division Bell.:grinthumb

And yes I enjoy the post Water's era of the band too, at least they gave us some excellent music before calling it a career because the likelihood of another Floyd concert or new album is almost zero, there's a better chance of seeing Roger touring The Wall until he gets tired of doing that.

Atom Heart Mother is a good album too I found, under rated if anything.

The song Dogs is really nice, probably my favourite from Animals actually. Nice solos, melody, got a nice mix of ambient music in there too.
