Spectral Mornings is a great Steve Hackett solo album. I recommend checking it out!

For PG era Genesis - for me the best and most cohesive listen is Selling England By the Pound. Cinema Show in itself is such a well written and performed track~

Also, I have to disagree about different eras of Genesis being a different band. I just see it as musical evolution. After all, if all Genesis did was pump out Lamb over and over, where would be the diversity and musical expression or different directions over the decades? Look at PG's solo works, they are incredible and he went in his own direction, but Collins/Rutherford/Banks were still able to take the band into new territory and make some great music as well - just not together. But the core of Genesis (Banks and Rutherford) still remained throughout the years.
;)

Well said Kuaizi. And Then There Were Three says it all. Three key members with two departures. IMO it's still valid that it's the same band making new music together. :grinthumb

Hey nice to see you again Kuaizi.:hab:

But I disagree, there is a Huge difference between the Phil Collins led era of Genesis and the Gabriel years. One was a prog band of the highest order, the other was "pop rock" and more commercially successful.

I have no problem with either line-up, I just prefer the more experimental early years of the band.

Peter Gabriel's solo work is in a league of it's own when I compare it to his old band mates. So and Us are masterpieces.

And after thinking it over, I would recommend this solo Steve Hackett album for BP to check out, "Please Don't Touch". With Steve Walsh and Phil Ehart of Kansas helping out, my favorite of his solo records.

Good to be back LG!! :)

Well, to counter your logic, then a band like Rush should be considered many different bands because of the different directions they took. 2112 is completely different than Vapor Trails, which is different than Signals. So should we say that since they used synths and 80's tech that they were a different band in that era? Or when they were more progressive they were a different band? And now with Clockwork Angels using new recording techniques and their sound is modern so that's a new band as well?
I still see plenty of prog influence in Genesis post-Gabriel. Look at tracks like Duke's Travels, Driving the Last Spike, Domino, Dodo/Lurker, and others, but they were able to put out popular hits as well that are also superb songs. The PG era Genesis was definitely something special, but he left and like I said, they all put out great music over the years and Genesis to me is Genesis (after all, if you listen to all the albums in order you can hear a slow progression from Trick all the way to We Can't Dance - it's not like it went from Lamb to Invisible Touch in a year)
:cheers2

BTW I will have to check out that Hackett album - haven't heard that one yet! Love me some Hackett (just picked up Squackett which was a solid release imo!)

as the band didn't bring in an outside singer, i think it was ok to call them genesis.
i wouldn't call a trick of the tail and wind and wuthering 'pop-rock', later on they were but not those two lps.

^^That's true, the first couple albums when it was just the 3 of them were the most adventurous, but I stand by the fact their most successful era they were a pop/rock band far more than any resemblance to their early proggy phase.

All you have to do is look at their greatest hits albums, are there more than a couple tracks from the Gabriel era?

...And Then There Were Three... is a good transition album. Genesis started showing their pop side while still maintaining that progressive sound.

Trespass to wind and wuthering perfect.
Get it all and listen a few times you should catch on. :)

In regards to prog Genesis. All prog gabriel prog and collins pop prog.
I 'm picky about the later stuff but do like a few songs from each album

I liked Genesis with Ray Wilson from Stiltskin (who were also a good band). He took Genesis back to the Gabriel-style and I think they made an error in sacking him. Having toured Calling All Stations, they could've tried recording at least one more album of new material.
