I'll always say The Smashing Pumpkins! Always! Every album was a conscious transition in where they were going musically and stylistically! Even Billy Corgans side projects would try something different for him! It's not just a matter of being my favorite band but they are my favorite band for being the type of band I could actually be just as excited about what they were going to do next and still be able to connect with each time! There's no more argument to be made here from me than the diehards of any of the biggest groups here! :grinthumb

David Bowie is, of course, the only legitimate owner of this thread.

Oh and on topic...I'd pick Queen. They had EVERY style with flair too along with the stage outfits. Well, they never did blues numbers that I can recall.

As bluesy as blues gets, dear. :D

And Queen would of course be my pick for the most versatile band. From "Ogre Battle" to "Melancholy Blues", "I Want to Break Free" to "Death On Two Legs", "Mustapha" to "Somebody To Love" and everywhere in between they did almost everything with such comfort and ease.

Of course only a fool would overlook David Bowie as well but he alone does not make up a band and that's what was asked for. :D

Also, an obviousness choice would be Faith No More. The range of "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies" to "Take This Bottle" along is commendable, especially since they're from the same album.

ELO dabbled in country & western, rhythm & blues, jazz, disco, new wave and synthpop to name a few!

And yet they played it under that exact same blanket to give all of their songs a very strong sense of sameness. Sure, they dabbled (I put quite a bit of emphasis on that word) in some different things but Jeff had a definite style that he liked to write in and has never really expanded beyond that. When ELO ventures into folk/acoustic, hard rock/metal, and other places outside their comfort zone let me know and I'll be a little more inclined to buy into their them being a versatile band.

When one actually listens to every release from No Answer to Electric Light Orchestra II to On the Third Day to Eldorado to Face the Music to A New World Record to Out of the Blue to Discovery to Time to Secret Messages to Balance of Power to ZOOM, there's no sense of sameness about ELO's music, there are differences with each album having its own distinct or unique sound even within a specific work, oh yeah, they did also dabble in hard rock/metal and folk/acoustic!

Don't agree with the Beatles being versatile ... but maybe because I'm not a fan? I appreciate and acknowledge their place in music history, but I think their music sounds "samey"

Queen on the other hand agreed with, could put their musical hand to anything and it works

Good one Cos. That is HEAVY too. For some reason Mercury's voice doesn't strike me as bluesy but he carries the tune well.
