Scorpions To Play World Cup Concert and Give Up Retirement Plans
News | Classic Rock

Scorpions guitarist Matthias Jabs has confirmed the band have given up on their plan to split – although they probably won't keep going the way they have in the past.

He says they've been invited to play at the opening ceremony of football's 2014 World Cup competition in Brazil. And he adds their next studio project is likely to include completed versions of songs they didn't finish in the 1980s and 1990s.

The German outfit announced their intention to break up after one last work tour in 2009. But as more and more dates were added they admitted they were reconsidering the decision.

:heheh: I was wondering what was going on! Seeing the Scorps had a "farewell" tour which I almost considered going to the show by me then missed and thought I had missed out! So maybe I will get another chance to see them?

Maybe they should have taken some more time before announcing a final tour...

When fans believe it is their last chance to see an old band like the Scorpions perform it adds more interest and most likely more energy at the concerts. Hopefully this isn't like The Who...never thought they would actually live up to one of their own songs..."Won't Get Fooled Again", cause they sure milked the "Absolutely, positively the last Who concert tour ever, don't miss out." :nw:

The situation with the Who (and a few other bands) came to my mind as well. Hopefully it's a matter of the Scorps deciding they're not ready to call it a day yet rather than running some scam (like those never-ending going out of business sales some shops have).

Difficult to give up something you have been doing all of your life and enjoy. I NEVER believe these "Farewell" type tours. Like Bruce brought up, The Who made such type of announcements and I know of Sinatra doing the same. Very few big name bands actually follow through that I am aware of.

"Going once, going twice......................not gone yet".....

I hear this quite frequently from bands. Maybe it is a ploy to beef up attendance at the concerts, I don't know. One thing is for sure, no band lasts forever and if fans want to see them perform, they better go now.

It isn't like the Scorps haven't been putting out any new albums (Like some bands ie: Aerosmith). I personally didn't think they were ready to retire, especially since "Sting in the Tail" charted so well.

Sting Of The Tail is an awesome disc. I scratch my head over farewell announcements anymore. First thing that comes to my mind is $$$...but always a small part of me that might believe it, where I'm hoping it's not gonna happen.

I'm still banking that Priest ain't done yet, after this Epitath deal, and perhaps after a new album KK will return, or better yet, return to do the actual album.

But, it will be great to get a new Scorpions album out of all this! They make great albums! Quite trustworthy, they are! :grinthumb
