I heard a rumour recently that Brand X is reforming with Percy Jones and John Goodsall for a US tour. How sweet would that be?!:)

I got into this style of music in the 70s because two of my favorite guitarists (Jeff Beck and Tommy Bolin) had worked on projects with some well known jazz artists.
Beck played on five tracks on Stanley Clarke's "Journey To Love" (1978) and Bolin played on "Spectrum" (1973) with Billy Cobham and "Mind Transplant" (1975) with Alphonse Mouzon.
Beck also did "Wired" (1976) with Jan Hammer and Bolin did a second session with Mouzon called "Tommy Bolin & Alphonse Fusion Jam".

Some LPs from my Top 25 list are:

Bonfire - s/t (1974)
Isotope - Illusion (1975)
Soft Machine - Bundles w/Allan Holdsworth (1975)
Soft Machine - Softs w/John Etheridge (1976)
Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior (1976)
Jean-Luc Ponty - Enigmatic Ocean (1977)
Gong - Expresso w/Allan Holdsworth (1977)
Coryell & Catherine - Twin House (acoustic) (1977)

Jazz-fusion can encompass so many different styles and structures, even metal. I think (hope) these suggestions are what you are looking for as IMO these aren't "noodling" as in the form of avant-garde, free-form, improvisitional and experimental.

:omg: what a list fabulous I`m with you here...:grinthumb

Tribal Tech w/ Scott Henderson and Gary Willis

Scott Henderson is one of the greatest guitarists I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. He has a great, ballsy rock tone like Jeff Beck, combined with the harmonic knowledge and jazz chops of Allan Holdsworth, and he has his own sound.

Try their swan song album, X. Or the self titled 1991 album, which is actually their fourth album. The first three are great, but very hard to find. All their albums feature great drummers and keyboard players, and fretless bass player Gary Willis.

And Scott has an excellent new solo album, Vibe Station. Best place to learn about fusion music is the Abstract Logix site where you can sample and buy CDs.
