Solomon's voice was smooth as silk:

A tool that he must have utilized to help him father his 21 children.

The Drifters (with Ben E. King)!

And a later recording by Ben E. King himself:

Finally Ben E. King's biggest hit:

Present day hip hop stars like Fifty Cent and Kanye West couldn't shine Ben E. King's shoes.

Further to this, in the UK we had a sub-genre named Northern Soul:

Northern soul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For those in the U.S. this is especially worthwhile reading.

Here's the 'rare' Northern Soul song 'Do I love You by Frank Wilson (A staff writer/producer at Motown).

I love all this stuff. I am a huge Motown fan. Add Earth Wind and Fire and The Commodores to the list (maybe they should be 70s, but I'm throwing them in anyway).

I saw EWF two years ago co-headline with Chicago, and it was an awesome show. It was only overshadowed by Michael Jackson passing two days later, so I didn't really get to soak in the experience. I need to see EWF again!

Thank, Thank You a Thread on `60`s Soul and R& B like most of you hear I`m a soul man the music is just so engrossing your up and dancing around ooh the other point I`d like to make is about the best book on soul music is by Peter Guralnick " Sweet Soul Music " its well worth checking out... or to quote Elvis Costello:
buy the book! in years to come it will seem like a bargain compared with all the wonderful records which you will have to buy after reading the vivid accounts of Sweet Soul Music.

well that's said it all I think...
