WOW. My brother has talked to me a few times about this guy's guitar, but I never really paid attention to his advice. My mistake. I'm listening to Play With Me off of his album Wired, and I am blown away. This guys is really something. I started listening to his album Jeff, which was a little too industrial for me. Any one else a Jeff Beck fan? Got any recommendations?

I never followed Jeff Beck before his solo career, so I cant vouch for anything before the "Blow by Blow" album.

IMO, "There and Back"(1980) is his best solo album:

Star Cycle

Too Much to Lose

You Never Know

The Pump

El Becko

The Golden Road

Space Boogie

The Final Peace

There's the entire album if you want to listen to it! This album is more instrumental, and that seems to suit my tastes. The Final Peace is a true highlight of Becks talents from the album. The first three songs on the album feature Jan Hammer as keyboardist, but I much prefer Tony Hymas on keyboards.

I think Jeff Beck is at his best when he is just jamming live. I saw him in Austin Tx in the mid 70's. Outstanding!

Jeff Beck is a fascinating rock guitarist. He seemed to prefer a low-profile career over being in a hugely successful band. I think the debut album Truth is probably the best album he ever did with the Jeff Beck Group. Beck-Ola sounds a bit half-assed to my ears (two Elvis covers and two lackluster intrumentals pad out the disc). I'd stick with the single-disc retrospective which has highlights from all his albums through 1989. Blow By Blow and Wired are the two masterpieces, all instrumental.

I only know "Hi ** Silver Lining" which I think is a pretty good song which he did just after he left the Yardbirds. He was good with the Yardbirds too - majority of their hits I believe came while Jeff Beck was Lead Guitar (replacing Eric Clapton around the time their first big hit came - "For Your Love" in 1965.).

You do realise of course that according to you, the top 3 kings of guitar were all in The Yardbirds!

But how can any opinion not be biased? You may disagree (which would of course be a reflection of your own biases), but to say that someone else's opinion is "biased" is really saying nothing at all.

Admittedly, Jeff Beck is my own favourite guitarist but based on surveys of classic rock fans' opinions, I'd say he ranks about fifth (right behind Peter Townshend but just ahead of Ritchie Blackmore) in popularity among classic rock fans.
