Re: The Cars

I think one of their defining features is that their sound was much better live, than it ever was on the records. I wouldn't be surprised if Ric was producing, or co-producing. He's been at it for years. (Even at the birth of The Cars - I think he was producing for the band Suicide.)

I like the production of the early Cars' records.. even Door to Door and Heartbeat City, I liked the sound.. I didn't like the music much, but they sounded good.. This one isn't sounding as good to me:confused:
So far, I like the music on the new one, though

Roy Thomas Baker had the magic touch (if I'm not mistaken).

I couldn't really stomach Door to Door for like, YEARS. It took me forever to kind of warm up to that album. (And I still wouldn't send for a copy on vinyl.)

Re: The Cars

I'm gonna geek out for a minute here and say: I wonder what would happen if they had started their career in Britain, rather than the United States. How different their sound probably would have been, and who they would appeal most to during the height of their popularity. If they would have signed with, say, someone like Tony Visconti (the man with the golden ear). There wasn't that much of a positive reception in the UK when they went there, or so I've been told, but I just wonder what would have happened if they'd started there.

That's a really interesting question lady! Personally I don't think that they would have received a real positive reception in the UK if they started there. It was all about punk during the era that The Cars first started out. Then yet again I'm not sure how the Brits feel about the beginning of new wave in the late seventies.

Re: The Cars

Ah yes, I'd completely forgotten that.

Their chances would have been greater between '70 and '75 but punk dominated much of the UK, as did (and this is quite a contrast) disco and very heavy synth-driven stuff toward the end of the 70s and into the light of new wave.

Re: The Cars

Having a string of good luck recently, I used to have this "Special" vinyl copy of The Cars debut album years ago, and now I've got a fantastic DVD quality rip from a friend. Sounds absolutely amazing.

It almost makes me want to cry, knowing that labels like this are no longer pressing vinyl or CD's anymore, they were one of the best companies ever.

The CARS

the CARS, the band that started in 1977 and saved us from disco with their debut song Just What I Needed which was released on the CARS self titled album from 1978 with Natalya Medenova on the cover with red lipstick and a steering wheel. Followed by Candyo in June of 1979 with their hit Lets go that got to number 14 in US charts. Over in Europe it reached # 5 i believe. Alberto Vargas stepped out of retirement at the age of 80 years old to paint this beautiful cover art of a girl named Candyo. Candyo became a true favorite of all fans of the CARS. Panorama was released in August of 1980. the dark album of the CARS that was hated by critics to say the least.

And who remembers this guy ,one of the lead singers of the CARS, Benjamin Orr? The voice behind Just What I Needed, All Mixed Up , Moving in Stereo, Candyo , You Cant Hold on To long, All I Can Do , Drive, and more. He will always be remembered and never be forgotten. Long live the legacy of the CARS
