Doesn't it seem like guitar rock has been on the decline since the late 1980s?
In my eyes guitar rock as we know it formed around 1962-1964 with the blues-based and r&b styles of the Beatles, Yardbirds, Animals, etc. and also the classic rock and roll style of the Beach Boys.
By the late 60s and throughout the 70s rock as at its best. Classic albums like Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side Of The Moon, Van Halen, Cat Scratch Fever, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, The Wall, Rumours, Who's Next, Who Are You, etc. (The list goes on and on. I can't think of one album of that quality from the 1990s.)
In the 80s rock was still pretty good as Iron Maiden, Kiss, Motley Crue, Metallica, Slayer, and others maintained the old-school standards of screaming guitars and thrashing drums, plus great songwriting. Of course there was a lot of techno pop in the 80s, but for those who wanted real rock it was there.
It's depressing to see what happened to rock since 1989. Album lengths got too long with the CD format. Quality of music dipped. The best bands were older bands like Pantera, Slayer, Metallica, Kiss, etc. The newer bands were mostly boring: nine inch nails, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, etc.
This decade, the 00s, has seen the end of great rock. Only the old guys like AC/DC and Metallica still no how to make a real rock record. Forgive me but Nickelback and other Creed clones sound very lame to me. The album format is pretty much a thing of the past thanks to digital downloads. I don't see any current bands making any lasting impact, they all suck.
Am I wrong?

by saying all new bands suck, you are closing your mind and your listening ventures. There is alot of new stuff that is different and interesting. The indie/alternative music is loaded with gems, you just have to dig to find them.

Fleet Foxes
Passion Pit
Bright Eyes
The Stone Roses

Okay they don't all totally suck but when was the last time any band released an album as good as The Wall? I don't think we'll ever see great rock albums again. The best albums of 2008 were by old bands: Metallica's Death Magnetic and AC/DC's Black Ice both rocked. They were the exceptions.
I'd guess there were more great albums in 1979 than there were from 1995 to present.
One theory I have is that it's all been done. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc. took rock as far as it could go and no one can top them. Will the Fleet Foxes or Passion Pit even have a chance to be great in this era of digital downloads?
If rock isn't dead, it's definitely diminished.

I think the only peeps who say rock is dead are the late 70s/80s disco-crap affacionados who could never relate to the "screeching" vocals of rock bands!!!

NOPE!!!!! I'm so sorry...ROCK IS ALIVE AND WELL.....but you gotta wake up and look around....'coz it's THERE...right in front of your EYES!!! :):)

Rock died years ago but each generation tries to do it differently and says it's new shit, but all we have today is a hand me down culture 2ND HAND RIFFS and emotions all used up. Rock is finished 1973 was the last year of the renaissance. The music business has gone from a passtime idea to a corporate mega deal Micheal ******' Jackson and Brittany, Madonna are what these corporations think you should listen too.Listen to Technicolor Web Of Sound on the net and a feeling of what you missed.

For some people rock is dead
I mean I hear to classic rock in front of my friends and they say
"Ew,why do you hear this old awful music?Listen to techno"
I can't believe that they compare ROCK with TECHNO!!!
I tried to explain them about classic rock,so I told them to hear "Stairway To Heaven"
They all hated the song.Yeah that's right. They hated stairway to heaven..
As I said, for some people rock is dead
But for me it's ALIVE!!!

Rock is ALIVE and FLOURISHING.....as long as we have ARTISTS like Marylin Manson ("love him/her or hate him/her....just take him/her!...."), rock will survive the test of time. Someone up here mentioned UNartists like madonna and MJ (RIP).......they won't even remember their names let alone their plastic "music" in some years time!:)

Rock can only die if we let it die. Yeah there is new rock music out that is good, but they just don't make good rock like they use to.

I think rock is slowly dying. Not as many fans about Pink Floyd, Kiss, Motley Crue, etc. It sucks, but it's true. Us fans gotta stick together.
