Steve Earle

Steve is a singer songwriter known for his Rock and Texas style Country as well as his political views. He is also a producer, author, a political activist, and an actor, and has written and directed a play.

Born in Fort Monroe, VA. on Jan 17, 1955 but he was raised near San Antonio, TX, Earle received his first guitar at the age of 11 and, by the time he was 13, had become proficient enough to win a school-sponsored talent contest. Despite his talent for music, he proved to be a wild child, often getting in trouble with local authorities. Furthermore, his rebellious, long-haired appearance and anti-Vietnam War stance was scorned by local country fans. After completing the eighth grade, Earle dropped out of school and, at the age of 16, left home with his uncle Nick Fain to begin traveling across the state. Eventually, he settled in Houston at the age of 18, where he married his first wife, Sandie, and began working odd jobs. While in Houston, he met singer/songwriter Townes Van Zandt, who would become Earle's foremost role model and inspiration. A year later, Earle moved to Nashville.

Garrett, you might be the man to ask. I D/L the album "I Feel Alright" about a month ago and had a hard time getting through it. Nothing like "Copperhead Road". I was expecting something similar. Any suggestions on Steve Earle's albums that are more in a "rockin" vein?

Man, Steve Earle is one of my heroes when it comes to "comebacks". He lived in Converse TX, which is a stone's throw from here. If there has been a hard luck story to come along, it's Earle's. He ventured to Nashville early on to make a name for himself, and things started clicking....BUT...

After Copperhead Road, things started going down hill. The man now known as Steve Earle isn't much like the guy before the "breakdown" in my opinion. For me, that's not a bad thing, as he has gone back to roots country and bluegrass, but I can understand why so many fans of his earlier works could be perplexed.

I stole the following quote from Wiki, as it pretty much sums up what happened to transform the man.

Earle had been a substance abuser since an early age and was addicted to heroin for many years. By the time of his 1990 album The Hard Way, it started to become clear that the drugs were seriously affecting him. By 1992, due to his drug problem, he had discontinued performing and recording for two years, a period he refers to as his "vacation in the ghetto." He eventually ended up in jail on drug and firearms charges. Kicking the drug habit while in jail, Earle came out a new man and released two albums within 18 months of his release in late 1994. His comeback album, Train a Comin', was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1996. Train a Comin' was a return to the country blues-influenced folk of Earle's early career and drew on his older catalog of unrecorded material.

As to "rockin' albums" I think his album The Revolution Starts Now from 2004 is probably the hardest thing he's put out in a while, but it is quite political.

Listener beware...

Yes ...have to admit that he is a difficult artist to pin down .....My favourite single album is the Del McCourey Band collaboration (The Mountain)...By the way his Galway girl became popular here in Britain and Ireland when used in a cider advert...

He's played it all really from bluegrass to grunge. The first Steve Earle album I bought was Train A'Comin and it's still prob my fav. I don't think he's made a bad album in the last 15-20 years.
