Rock Star was cool....Come on with Billy Gibbons as the "voice asking the questions"!!! You cant get much cooler than that :)

The fact that Ted Nugent was in their video was enough for me to swear them off for life. I cannot stand that man.

....eh....at the end of the day though, critics don't know about music anymore than the average guy does. I take that back...the average guy probably knows a helluva lot more.

:grinthumb :cheers2

Well critics will always have their whipping boys.

I think one of the reasons people hate Nickelback and Maroon 5 is because they are so safe to the point of being elevator music (I've heard them played on the "lite and easy" station), and the fact that they sell millions and get tons of airplay while artists who are far more interesting than them are relegated to cult status and the only airplay they'll get will be on the NPR type stations. Someone namedropped My Morning Jacket earlier. IMO MMJ are far more interesting a band but they don't tailor-make their music for mini-van driving housewives, so they're just a cult band.

Like I said earlier, I didn't mind them early on, but once they put Ted Nugent in their video, they lost me for good.

They do have songs that make the lite and easy stations and those are the songs I like the least.Other bands have done that in the past like Journey ,Foreigner,Styx and REO Speedwagon. Those songs are always their worst songs for me.They pick their poppy ballads instead of their rock songs.I guess they are more commercial friendly

And having the Nuge in their video makes me like them even more.Uncle Ted Rules.

It's a bad sign when "they actually use guitars" is the standard by which we judge recording artists these days, but it's true and yes, I have heard worse (U2, Coldplay, Kings of Leon). Although my dislike of Nickelback isn't the reason I think a lot of other people tend to dislike them or Maroon 5 (lots of popularity, enough soft hits to get on "lite rock" radio) but because Chad's pretty whiny in his songs. I feel you can sing about sorrow in a way that doesn't come across as pathetic but I'll admit, that's a really subjective thing to say. I'm sure people could say the same about my songs. I just remember how when these guys were new and "cool," you had everyone hating on Creed.

Since they're not a big deal right now, Nickelback has become the convenient target but, really, most the 90s was this grave, post-apocalyptic scene out of "Gone With The Wind" when it came to rock. I was in a Ralphs last weekend and it was all 90s Top 40 rock and it made me wish they were playing NPR instead (and I'd rather be dead than listen to NPR on purpose). I had truly forgotten how bland, boring and whiny that mess was. Yes, they played guitars, too--through amps set to 3. All quarter notes. Compelling vocal performances? Unless you count screamo, not really. Just a really dark era for guitar rock IMO.

Well were the lite rock stations actually playing Journey and REO in the day? I was always under the impression that the reputations as a "rock band" scared them away from Streisand and Manilow fans. But now that those who grew up in the 80's are todays mini-van driving soccer moms (Nickelback and Daughtry's largest audience), times have changed enough that "Lite 106" type stations don't mind playing something a little heavier because the 45 year old soccer moms of 2011 who grew up on that stuff can handle their a little more rock in their "soft rock" than the 45 year old soccer moms from 1981.
