I have to admit I am struggling with this one .. Peter Green wrote about his demons "Man Of The World", "Green Manalishi", " Show Biz Blues" .. Jim Morrison more than touched upon the subject, Black Sabbath revealed the darker side as did the Stones .. I think plenty of old bands did some soul searching .. Kurt was maybe just laying it on the line you know life isn't always a bed of roses .. ???

I always thought depression was popularised by ambient black metal bands, not grunge or Nirvana.

Groovy Man I agree with you and see your points. I don't think the 50's through the 80's were FULL of depressing songs about suicide, depression, accidental deaths or whatever....but there were plenty.

I don't feel the 90's were FULL of it either and ALOT less today. As far as your examples, like Nirvana, we can both be fair. I can say...yeah sure...it seemed pretty trendy and popular but you gotta admit, MTV and American promotion helped out ALOT!

Oh and bitchin' Foghat Sig!!

:cheers2

MP, this isn't an attack on Nirvana (I didn't even mention them) - but the whole grunge era.

The grunge rock era of the 90's was drenched with depressing songs, far far more than any other era. I mean it's pretty much known grunge was depressing music. And before anyone brings up the blues - there a big difference between, ''my baby left my, my house burnt down, I feel so sad'' and ''life sucks, I hate mommy and daddy, f**k everybody, gimme medication, before I kill myself''

Oh and bitchin' Foghat Sig!!

:cheers2

Thanks! - ''Stone Blue, rock and roll, sure helped me through''! :)

Hey man, everybody gets the blues - it's just what you deal with them! :grinthumb

Personally...I think the Bee Gees helped kill Rock N' Roll....

with there lame 60's songs and 70's disco songs...

but, this thread isn't about Bee Gees...

To say songs about death defined the 60's is ridiculous....

(Sorry, Soots and MP)

In the 90's music shifted into ''life sucks'' and ''mommy and daddy don't hug me enough'', so ''that's why I'm a head case with issues, gimme some meds'' and ''I don't care about nothing'' . This happened in the 90's on a grand scale....grunge, death metal, whenever that exactly started....

Nowadays modern music is about blah....comatose music....everyone is shell shocked....no one gives a crap about anything...

I'm not saying the 60's, 70's music was a garden party...war, riots, social issues....but you gotta say, musicians sang songs about change with these issues.....not life sucks, I'm depressed, I don't care about anything.

I'm sure I'll be attacked for my opinions....I'm sure of that.

But, let me say this....sure every decade had it's problems, but we're talking about the music of these times, and if you can't see the difference between what they were singing about in the 60's and 70's and the difference between the music of the 90's and beyond - there's no use for a discussion.

:)

No Groovy, I agree with EVERYTHING you just said. Atleast they were singing about the changes and not secluding themselves and saying i don't care about anything, I'll go cut myself. Very, very nicely put. :grinthumb

One way or the other, any era of rock n roll is still gonna be rock n roll whether or not they're singing about lollipops and unicorns or mommy's ambien. I personally don't celebrate depression so therefore i enjoy the lyrics (along with the "music") in the earlier decades. It's hard for me to get into a band that was introduced after 1978-85 or so. Maybe I'm too biased. Idk. :grinthumb I love all of the debating!

I def agree with that. I think everyone's so jaded now because in the rock world it's all been done before. Unless you're killing yourself onstage or flashing your hermaphrodite parts at the crowd a la Lady Gaga, no one cares. Music is so blase and fleeting these days.

I think what has changed Rock N' Roll is that people are always wanting to shock and piss off the generation before them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that part of the reason why Rock N' Roll was created in the first place? :heheh:
