I don't know exactly where I'm going with this, but I'm just trying to throw some ideas out there on the table.

I was talking to a man the other day who was probably 55-60 years old and has been around to witness the diversity in pop culture throughout the years.

He pointed out something to me that had me thinking. He said that music (rock n roll) used to be all about sex, drugs, and rock n roll. :grinthumb

I laughed and agreed. But, nowadays, people want to buy songs that sing about death and suicide and killing.

He called this sex, drugs, rock n roll, and death.

He went on to say that Nirvana was the cause of all this.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Now, I know that one factor is hardly ever the cause of an entire pop culture shift, but, he made a valid point that Nirvana drew in teenagers like bugs to a light.

For Example:
By: Nirvana
I Hate Myself And Want To Die

Running nose and runny yolk
Even if you have a cold still
You can cough on me again
I still haven't had my full fill

In the someday -- What's that sound?
End it someday -- What's that song?

Broken heart and broken bones
Finger pressing down the horse pills

One more quirky cliched phrase
You're the one I wanna refill

(spoken very softly behind the guitar)

Words are broken lives
Five pieces of board, turned around
attached to the skull by common wood screws
A child would like to do it
-----------------------------------------------
Now, what about Jim morrison and the doors? He was always about The End and life is greener on the other side.

"Break on through to the other side."

Jim Morrison and the doors were around alot longer before Nirvana although the most common music between the Doors and Nirvana were still no match with slipknot's death lyrics or Cannibal Corpse.:wtf:

(just the band name makes me eek.)

What about some good old CCR "Born on the Bayou" or Grateful Dead "eyes of the world" to lift your head up!?!?:wtf:

If anybody has any opinions I'd love to here them!

Thanks!!:grinthumb

Music doesn't change so much as peoples perspective on it changes as they grow older for the most part. If you look hard enough as you pointed out you will see the same themes used throughout all eras of music. The one possible change is the freedom not to have to cover up or disguise taboos as much.

Thematically, rock 'n roll has never really been "about" one specific thing. There are plentiful songs out there to cover just about any topic that you can imagine. So, in that respect, not much has changed since the beginning.

The Blues is riddled with dark morbid themes, a way of life I guess ..

The influence of Blues in Rock music is massive. :cheers2
