I've gone to a few shows without knowing much or anything about the band or musician? I'll read about a band or artist and take a chance and go see them. Sometimes it's paid off and I got into some new music (mostly with blues artists). Other times I've left the show shaking my head.

Big Head Todd and In Flames are two recent mistakes. The former was laden with too many jangly guitar parts for me and the latter just too thrash metal for my ears.
On the other hand, Les Dudek (best known for his work w/ Steve Miller) was a pleasent surprise. Great blues rock. And Chris Duarte another blues rock guy blew me away as well.

BTW the thread title doesn't correspond with this post. Anyone know how edit that?

In a state of deep, deep fascination
I changed the thread title to reflect your title in the post.

As far as the question, I usually know what i'm getting into, but there have been a few times I went to a show without knowing what to expect.

I went to a Buddy Guy show just off of what I heard others say about him, and it was obviously a great show.

I saw Mogwai because my bro really liked them. It wasn't quite my thing, but they had a couple of good songs.

Never. Usually I won't bother spending money going to see an artist that is unknown to me. In this day and age it never happens cause I always at least check out their music online. When I was in radio I always checked out their album and any promo info they might have sent.

I can't recall doing that for the mainliners, maybe not knowing much about the opening bands on occasion, but that wasn't always a bad thing, sometimes they played their ass off and were better.

Yeah, I've been to a few, but my qualifier is, I didn't pay for my ticket.

Wall of Voodoo - Didn't know anything about them except "Mexican Radio", but they were great. Stan Ridgway; unique voice, good showman, good show.

Big Country - Virtual unknowns to me at the time. Show was visually stunning, band rocked. Loud yet clean sound, excellent pop tunesmiths, great show.

The Judybats - Quirky band. 1st album was great. Saw them on the last night of a ten month club tour. Their asses were draggin' but they put on a great show. Muffed a few notes, voices wavered. But they soldiered on. True professionals.

I did it in the 70's when concerts were inexpensive. I wouldn't do it now. Even the "cheap" shows aren't really cheap. My time is also more valuable to me now, so I do not want to waste my time on a group I know nothing about, that may be really bad.

i'll have to agree with billtjr51 on this one. i did this almost on a weekly basis in the 60's. i grew up a few blocks from from the fillmore east and tons of other venues. back then most of them were bars and coffee houses before the fillmore opened so i guess it doesn't fit your category of going to a "concert" blind. we would just show up to hear whoever was playing that night. but it cost us so little (sometimes just the price of a drink, either alcohalic or not) it wasn't a loss either way. now it's like a real commitment and truthfully if the music out now did it for me the way it did back in the 60's-70's, i might try it more often.

No, any time I've gone to a show I've always known about them.

My music is too important to me to spend money on an unknown entity.

That's not to say I would never do it. If tickets fell in my lap for free, I would absolutely go see an artist I knew nothing about.
