Gonna have to disagree there.......... Townshend's play was not nearly as skilled as Clapton, Hedrix, or even Page.

It's a matter of taste my friend- I just happen to enjoy Pete Townshend's work more than some of the others

basically townshend falls into the same category as kurt cobain or neil young where they aren't flashy technical players but they prove to be far superior composers with the instrument than most of their counterparts.

Hey MagicRat,

Chech out Terry's work on Southern California Purples and Free Form Guitar, Poem 58 and I'm A Man. As a contemporary of Hendrix's, As you can hear, he is easily as good, possibly way better.

I'm just sayin' . . .

I do not see how anyone can really rate some of the great guitar players over one another. So many styles, so much subjectivity. Some of the best guitar players I have ever hear came from more obscure bands like
Jan Van Akkerman of Focus. It is hard for me to believe there were very many more technically competent guitar players than he. Greg Lake of ELP, who primary played bass, was one of the mroe amazing guitar players I ever saw. Steve Howe of Yes is another.

I've given up also on the "who's the greatest guitarist" thingy.
My favourite guitarists all have different styles and enjoy listening to them, depending on my mood and what catches my attention at a particular moment.

They don't necessarily have to be the most popular and among my favs in no particular order are:

Tony Iommi
Alvin Lee
Tommy Bolin
Jan Akkerman
John Cippollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service)
Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna)
Johnny Winter
Michael Schenker
etc...

A few more good guitarists that I feel deserve more recognition than they get.

Paul Kossof (Free)
Kim Simmonds (Savoy Brown)
'Lonesome Dave' Peverett (Foghat)
Rod Price (Foghat)
Mick Box (Uriah Heep)
Martin Barre (Jethro Tull)

I voted for Hendrix, and BTW isn't this 60s guitarists? if so I would add Alvin Lee to the list.
