in the "shoulda, woulda, coulda" department...add this show that i just found while looking for something else in my closet.this ad in an old local greenwich village paper from 1969 let's me know that i could have seen "lead" zeppelin at steve's paul the scene in february 1969. this club was about the size of your grandma's old basement...just as hot and sweaty too when packed with people as it ususally was after about 2 am. it was the place that most musicians came to jam after performing elsewhere in nyc and where some pretty famous people sat in with each other. it's funny to me that all these years later, very few people have ever even heard of this place unless they were there at the time. i saw the doors there (cannot remember the year..either 67 or 68) and van the man amongst others. that's probably the reason i saved this old paper. now i see that i could have gone to this zeppelin show just a couple of weeks later....
bummer....:+(

Hey DeeZee

My old bandmember in Whitehorse, David Day (bttm cntr), played Steve Paul's Scene club when his previous band the Frantics went to NY back in the late '60s.

The Frantics were on ATCO, & toured with Rick Derringer & the McCoys in '68-'69. They opened shows with the Yardbirds & Rascals & many others. While staying with the McCoys in NY, David went to the Scene one night when Hendrix was jamming.

Randy Hobbs, the McCoy's bassist was playing. Wanting to take a break, Randy turned over his bass to David, leaving David on stage jamming with Hendrix. David says Jim Morrison came up, totally drunk, screwed around, & basically ruined the jam, & Hendrix packed it in.

David went on to play kybrds with me in LA with Whitehorse from '72-'77, & we continue to be friends, & last played together a couple of weekend gigs @ the Whiskey in '95.

Frantics guitarist Kim Sherman (glasses) played in Whitehorse prior to Mick Mars joining in '74.

Frantics lead singer Max (top) went on to work for Robert Stigwood & co-managed Derek & the Dominos, Mike Reno in Moxie, & BTO, as well as Whitehorse. Nowadays, he's one of the owners of The Cheescake Factory restaurant chain!

Frantics kybdst / vocalist Jim Haas (top lft) went on to be a famed session / backup singer on the Floyd's Wall & for Elton John, as well as being the "ghost singer" behind Andy Williams on his old TV show, as well as Donnie & Marie!

This was the cover of Frantics "Conception" released in '70 on ATCO:

hey pooldude

never heard of the frantics...were they based out of LA? don't think i ever saw them. but lots of times back then a different groups would open for a bigger band in different parts of the country. when i first saw the young rascals they were first a kind of house band for murray the k. then when they hit it, i saw vanilla fudge open for them. at the time they were not well known and a local new york band.

thanks for a great behind the scenes story of this place. i can just imagine some other the other stories as this was the place where so many musicians hung out. jimi hendrix was there a lot at the time and i saw him there frequently while he was building electric ladyland a few blocks from my house. the only time i saw the mc coys was when they had just released "hang on sloopy" and they were appearing at a murray the k show. i chased rick down a few blocks to get his autograph and i still have it on the murray the k record i got at the show. of course back then he was rick ZERRINGER not derringer. have never figured out why he changed it from a "z' to a "d". maybe he wanted it to sound like the gun and more dangerous...lol. saw him after that but only when he was touring with edgar winter.

truthfully my favorite thing about your post is that you guys are still friends...can't beat still having the friends who went through those great early years with you.

I hope you didn't do too much damage to that little munchkin Ricky Z, when you finally caught up with him!

ohyeah: :eek:hyeah: :eek:hyeah:

sounds like you might have played on the same bill with him somewhere along the line...even in his beatle boots i still towered over him...lol.

there was group of us waiting to talk to peter and gordon who were in the bar next door to the theater with all the other performers between shows. obviously we were too young to get into the bar. when the mc coys walked out, no one seemd to care too much but my friend and i went up to talk to them and they ran! guess they'd seen "hard day's night" too many times and thought that they'd be mobbed.

here's the program from that show. can't find my LP with his signature on it right now.... though god knows it's in this place somewhere.

Great tales from the crypt, Pooldude.

Here's another funny Rock n' Roll story that kinda fits the topic "One That Got Away", from a couple years further down the line.

This reminds me of the time that Whitehorse played the wedding reception for the daughter of famed TV producer Stephan Hatos (Let's Make a Deal) 30 some years ago.

We loaded all our gear up the security elevator to the roof-top penthouse suite of this ritzy hi-rise building overlooking Mission Bay in San Diego.

The place was filled with lots of wealthy old folks, tons of good looking chicks, & haughty celebrity type dudes, all out there dancing to Whitehorse.

Whitehorse '73 (pre Mick Mars) in Fresno opening for Dr John the NightTripper. That's me on the lft:

As the evening progressed, the Groom got drunker & drunker, & was dancing & cavorting with all the other women except for his new wife.

The more he danced with the other chicks, the more he started groping them & trying to Deep Throat French Kiss them, right there in front of all the family. He was just getting really sloppy drunk, & us guys in the band were totally cracking up @ the events unfolding in front of us.

Finally, unable to take the indignity any more, this famous TV producer's daughter totally flipped out, screaming & shrieking hysterically; the whole party blew up into sobbing relatives & distraught bridesmaids...while Whitehorse was grinding out an especially rousing, extended rendition of Foghat's "I Just Wanna Make Love to You"!

The wedding reception dissolved into total chaos, with all the guests heading for the nearest elevator. Whitehorse got paid about $750 (in advance) for a couple sets, which was big dough in 1973.

And as the entire wedding reception dissolved into battling in-laws & screaming women...I went out on the 10th floor veranda to smoke some herb, & enjoy the glimmering lights in the San Diego sunset overlooking Mission Bay, & the ocean to the west...

:heheh: :heheh: HYSTERICAL STORY!!!

it has to be fun watching this..especially not having anything invested in these people. the bride and her father on the other hand probably didn't
find it quite as amusing.
