Re: "The Official" Nine Inch Nails Thread

I am not a huge NIN fan, but I do have the Downward Spiral album.

I agree, Riff Raff, Closer is a really good song (from the Downward Spiral), but you have to be sure to hear the album version, the full length unedited song. This song will rattle your whole brain with headphones on :D I also like Hurt and Mr. Self Destruct from this album, too.

I've gotten way into a Pretty Hate Machine album lately which I would think would be more up your alley Magic! The Downward Spiral is a very experimental mood album! It's not the most accessible IMO. Trent puts out a lot of good Rock songs on top of his experimental Industrial works. The best mood pieces he has are on The Fragile though which is a gorgeous album that has great rock tracks as well! Have you listened to the other tracks in the thread Magic. I'm not sure how much you explored after The Downward Spiral but you may be surprised! :grinthumb

I have explored some of NIN's other works, sooty, and some of it comes across too angry for my tastes. Sometimes I think Trent has a this huge chip on his shoulder that really comes out in his music. Don't get me wrong, this can be a good thing for those that get into all the angst. I much prefer his experimental works and his synth songs that are more on the pop side with a psychedlic feel.

Honestly, though, I am a casual listener. I do like "With Teeth", but haven't gotten this album yet.

*Tell her I think Tool is pretentious and overrated! :lmao: I'll take Maynard in A Perfect Circle any day! :lmao:*

I understand the angst part! In fact one of my favorite tracks from Trent is "Something I Can Never Have" which can be downright depressing (Music can't ever depress me personally though). Do you like this song though Magic? It's my favorite NIN:

The Perfect Drug

Re: "The Official" Nine Inch Nails Thread

Nine Inch Nails was the soundtrack of my life during junior high and high school. I remember I didn't like them at first until I saw the video to Closer on MTV. I loved the song and decided to pick up a copy of The Downward Spiral from my local record store and the rest is history. I collected all their albums along with their singles, bootlegs, t-shirts, etc. I was the crazed gothic fangirl that had Trent's face plastered all over my bedroom walls. I was OBSESSED with him!!! I even wrote a biography on him for an English project my freshman year. I got to see NIN in concert back in 2000 for the Fragility 2.0 tour. My brother's best friend at the time was super cool enough to take me to the show. Getting to see Trent in the flesh? I was in heaven!!!

Sadly my die hard fandom for NIN has weened after The Fragile. With Teeth was okay but I did not like Year Zero and I haven't really heard anything off of Ghosts I-IV and The Slip.

One thing that I absolutely admire about Trent is that the man truly cares for his fans. He's looked to them for creative input and is staunchly against organizations like the RIAA and encourages people to download his music.

Re: "The Official" Nine Inch Nails Thread

Great post Lady B! I have to say that while the Fragile was a great album I did enjoy the followups! I love artist that switch their game up throughout their career and I thought it was amazing that Trent was able to switch up his style, lighten it a little bit and even make a little catchier without becoming something else entirely! It's like with most groups who get criticized for not being so dark anymore. That's not life for most people so when an artist has a happier period it's great that they're true to themselves and reflect it. I'm not saying "With Teeth" is sunshine and rainbows but it has way more levity than before. With "Year Zero" is was a cool concept album that didn't beat the listener over the head. I loved in both albums that Trent was adding layers of a funk sound. Anyway, I'm not saying you're wrong not to like them but actually thankful for your point of view as it gave me some food for though on why I personally liked those albums. It's awesome that you got to see Trent perform. He's definitely high up on my bucket list! :grinthumb

Personally I think ghosts is definitely worth the listen. It's not your normal album, the songs aren't entertaining, they are much closer to beautiful.
