Re: Bob Dylan

I do like Dylan a lot, but I've never understood his status as poet laureate of American popular music. I respect his achievements early in his career. But he stalled out somewhere along the lines and never really recovered after "Blood on the Tracks"...IMHO, of course, and I admit that he is a critical blind spot for me...a huge one...I don't think of him that way, because I do enjoy a good chunk of his output. But he's kind of like Neil Young, in that for every one classic record there are probably three or four considerably less stellar albums he's put out.

I don't like every Dylan album, but if you're a fan, you're missing out on some good albums he released after Blood on the Tracks. Especially Desire, Street Legal, and Love and Theft in my opinion. I like Modern Times, Together Through Life and Tell Tale Signs too.

I don't think they live up to the magic of his '60's stuff, but they would be landmarks for most other artists. When you release as much as Dylan and Young have, you're going to miss every now and then.

Re: Bob Dylan

I'm sure the change freaked out alot of fans but hey...he wanted to rock out.

People always give Dylan credit for influencing the Beatles, but I think the Beatles influenced him just as much and that's one reason he went electric. They were opposite ends of the spectrum (Beatles the overall sound, Dylan the lyrics) that influenced each other to take music to another level. That's why they are my 2 favorite artists.

Re: Bob Dylan

^^Not a huge Dylan fan, but I do respect him a lot especially when he did go electric despite the despair and sense of betrayal his hard core fans expressed by booing him. If nothing else Bob Dylan is living proof of the classic Sinatra song "I Did It My Way".:grinthumb

hahaha good point. Dylan always did do it his way.

Have you listened to his classic albums? I always thought of Dylan as a album guy much like the Beatles. The songs are all great, but they are even better in the context of an album. Whereas I think artists like the Who are hits guys.

Most of his albums bring a certain feel and are a piece of art.

Re: Bob Dylan

One of the all time greats and still going strong.

I've seen him 15 times in concert and hope to see him a few more times.

Here's one of my favorite Dylan songs. If I'm not mistaken it was recorded during the Freewheelin Bob Dylan sessions but for whatever reason it was left off the album.

He Was a Friend of Mine

Re: Bob Dylan

Why have I not posted in this thread yet. Bob Dylan is amazing:

The String Quartet does a really really cool version of Hurricane:

And just for kicks, the original version:

Re: Bob Dylan

I honestly have to say, I haven't heard much of his stuff. My friend likes him a whole lot though. And out of the few songs I have heard, I've liked pretty much all of them.

I would suggest getting the Essential Bob Dylan album. A lot of his greatest songs are on that album.
