Re: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Here's my fav CCR toon. This is the only vid I can find that works in the UK - hope it plays elsewhere.

Here's the Liberty label. There was something very hip about watching this spin on your small-town vinyl turntable in the 1960s, knowing that it had come from the USA.:)

Nothing to do with CCR, but a thought...

Interesting... your comment about "knowing it came from the USA."

I'm from the US and the majority of my favorite bands are from the UK, so when I get stuff that I know came out of Britain, I get excited.

I guess the grass always seems greener...or cooler in this instance. :D

Indeed a good point, Architect. I guess most of the planet has beed seduced somewhat by Hollywood + The Beach Boys etc. :)
So it was heartening to see the Demi Moore character in 'Ghost' using a shoe box decorated with the British Union Flag (Union Jack) to keep her photos in. Do we really make better shoes than the USA?
Oh well...:cheers2

Re: Creedence Clearwater Revival

my favorite song is "Up Around The Bend"

and do they have a bad album?
I have a good number of songs by them but no full albums, but there is at least one song from every album, and I haven't found one I don't like...
This band was very ahead of their time though

They're last album 'Mardi Gras' was pretty bad.

I have to disagree, that album contains one of their best classic hits:

and another timeless tune:

Re: Creedence Clearwater Revival

I never really got into their albums, though I loved many of their singles. Probably my two favorites were "Who'll Stop the Rain" and the much less well-known "Lodi."

^^For a long time I only had a compilation vinyl album of CCR's biggest hit singles, but then I picked up Cosmos Factory and have added 3 other albums to the collection. For casual fans the greatest hits CD has all their famous best loved songs, but like some other older bands I discovered I was missing out on lots of other good material so I delved a little deeper into their catalog. Very prolific band I must say averaged almost two records a year for the time they were together.

Same here guys! I can't say I haven't got into their albums as I never delved into them but they became with The Doors tied for my favorite Classic Rock band just with this flawless collection that everyone, their mom and their mom, their dad and their dad, their sister, sister in law, brother, brother in law, pet dog, cat, turtle, etc all own:

I'm going to change that though starting with the debut! :grinthumb

First let's get out of the way that "I Put a Spell On You" is a trippy enchanting classic and "Susie Q" is another deserving staple of their catalog. Now for the album as a whole this is the bluesiest I've ever heard them. I never knew they did blues with the purity of "Get Down Woman". IMO they do Blues much better than Zeppelin though. How can you fail with the vocals of Fogerty though? The latter half of the album is what got me hooked with the deeper cuts!

Porterville
(my favorite Fogerty vocal on the album, I like the backing vocals too)

Gloomy
My favorite track off of the album. I love the "gloomy" dark tone and the weird elements going on at 1:42 on! :grinthumb

Walk On The Water
(stellar vocal, epic and weird closer)

Let's see if I can get into Creedence more as an album band on the next selection. I've got a good vibe though as I've heard it's a good album and debuts are rusty sometimes! Trust me, nothings tarnished either way as Chronicle is just pure perfection but let's see where this goes! Let's try!:

Bayou Country

Wow, I'm inclined to agree with people in this thread, Craig In Indy comes to mind, that say these guys aren't an album band. I mean all the songs have the great vocals by Fogerty but the deeper cuts on this album are soooo weak IMO. The have no oooomph and they honestly sound like filler! Sorry guys! It started off great with "Born On The Bayou" and "Proud Mary"is still a solid classic. Good Golly miss Molly is likely my least favorite cover they've done. In some cases discovering these bands by album has increase my love for them but this time it may be tarnishing one of my prior favs. The difference between their hits and their album tracks seem miles apart!

Looking at the track listing for the next album this may be even unfair to rate it as it's filled with favorites. The challenge is to see if the deeper cuts hold up as well though which hasn't been my experience so far. Here's my little review of my experience with:

Green River
615%2Bd83M60L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Two great songs start off this album with "Green River" and "Locomotion". They are both swamp boogie stompers and go together well! "Tombstone Shadow" is alright! It's a better authentic blues attempt than a lot of classic rock bands in my experience but it feels by the numbers to me. "Wrote a Song For Everyone" is excellent. It's not on my Chronicle collection but is on the second one. I've heard it before. Fogerty's vocals shine on that track. He gets to be a storyteller on tracks like those and every detail of his expressive vocal gets to be heard in clarity on that track. There's a lot of character and detail in his vocal repertoire. "Bad Moon Rising" gets an instant pass! I mean perfect song and likely will be the best song on the album. If you can't move to this jam you are likely inhuman. "Lodi" is another masterpiece. I think this would be my favorite vocal on the album. It's the perfect mix of swamp jam and ballad. "Cross Tie Walker" was decent. It was high energy but sounded like a generic clone of their sound in general with nothing to set it apart. "Sinister Purpose" on the other hand is a step above and unless the last track is really impressive will be my favorite deeper cut off of the album.

Sinister Purpose

The above track has a different vocal quality and slighter darker tone than the rest of the album which I like. The guitar riffs are really cool as well. They are more drawn out and melodic than usual. It sounds like a cross between their voodooish "I Put A Spell On You" and their harder edged swamp rock. The last track "The Night Time Is The Right Time" is different. Creedence does doo-wop. I can dig that! Love the background singers chiming in.

As a whole I'd say this is my favorite Creedence album thus far. It had the advantage of the hits but it was also the most diverse sounding. It had a dud or two but most of the album i could get into. A step up and maybe Creedence gets better with each album
. :grinthumb
