VIRGIN STEELE :

Formed October 1981, New York, NY, United States

Members David Defeis [aka The Lion, Young Zeus] (vocals, keyboards, bass, orchestral arrangements), Jack Starr (guitar, 1981-84), Joe O'Reilly (bass, 1981-92), Joey Ayvazian (drums, 1981-95), Edward Pursino [aka Van Dorian] (guitar, bass, 1985-present), Rob DeMartino (bass, 1993-2001), Frank Gilchriest [aka The Animal, The Baron, The Kraken] (drums, 1995-present), Joshua Block [aka The Sorceror] (bass, 2001-present)

Genres Epic Heavy Metal, American Power Metal, Hard Rock W/ strong Progressive / Symphonic Influences

Virgin Steele is to these ears like a much more sophisticated/ Intellectual and progressive minded Manowar. As a Manowar fan myself I mean that in the best way possible.

1982 Virgin Steele
1983 Guardians of the Flame
1986 Noble Savage
1988 Age of Consent
1993 Life Among the Ruins
1994 The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Part One
1995 The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Part Two
1998 Invictus
1999 The House of Atreus: Act I
2000 The House of Atreus: Act II
2006 Visions of Eden
2010 The Black Light Bacchanalia

I own all but Life Among The Ruins & the s/t debut. The first three are definitely not my favorites. The lyrics and the feel of this
band is of an epic nature. Lyrical content revolves around real life history and mythology of the Godz alike and is handled in an intelligent manner that I really enjoy.

I plan to do a more in depth overview of this band that spans their discography as they are one of my favorite power metal bands and I feel that they have a recorded history that deserves a closer investigation but these examples will work for now.

Re: VIRGIN STEELE more epic power

The videos you posted DKW are excellent. I will wait for you to post more on this band. It looks like they have a pretty massive discog to sort through, so I will wait on your recommendations.

Oh, these guys remind me of Crimson Glory, which is a band I definitely like so I am sure I will find more than one album I will want from VS.

Sorry to say that I am being kind of lazy these days ( busy with X-mas etc. )
Magic, but I am going to give my recs the easy way....

My very favorites: Age of Consent, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Part One,
Invictus, The House of Atreus: Act I

Also excellent: The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Part Two, The House of Atreus: Act II, The Black Light Bacchanalia.

Good : Visions of Eden

Good but a little bit more in the generic 80's power metal vein : S/T ,Guardians of the Flame , Noble Savage.

Way too middle of the road and radio happy for me: Life Among the Ruins

My favorite albums are The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1&2. In fact these are the only Virgin Steele albums I listened more. Emalaith is a great epic power ballad.

I've only listened to the early stuff, first two albums and an EP - love that stuff.

Re: VIRGIN STEELE more epic power

The early stuff is decent especially Guardian and Savage but I think they don't really come into their own until Age as far as song writing is concerned.

The level of musicianship has always been high.

Which LP did you pick up, LG ?
