I would have to say equally impressive but with a few twists and turns. Short career, many artists have made their mark in music history. The Kingsman and Buddy Holly come to mind. Long, some still produce worthy music while others seem to just be protecting their copyrights.

For me it's longevity. A great band can amaze my brain to tiny little bits for maybe a couple years if they have a small discography. But a band that can keep challenging themselves and putting out great material for 30 years can amaze my brain to tiny little bits for a decade or more. A lot of bands can capture that immutable magic for one or two records, but the artists who can do it for 10 or 15 albums are truly in a league of their own.

Sure, Nirvana and Hendrix had this unbelievable impact and their work is unfathomably good. But who knows if that's all the good work they ever would have done. I find it truly, genuinely mind boggling how someone who grew up worshiping Roy Orbison can out-noise Sonic Youth in 1990 as was the case with Neil Young, or how a staple of 70s rock can craft much of their biggest and most-beloved music in '89 and '93 as is the case with Tom Petty. That impresses me more.

the most impressive is longevity with the orginal lineup. Bands that are really talented throughout often have a harder time co existing. Sometimes it is good to have those role members that occupy less ego.
I do not like U2 by any stress of the imagination, but i respect what they have been able acommplish longevity wise and keeping their original lineup.

Longevity with Equally Impressive being next.

There is something special about standing the test of time, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart they are still relevant now 100's of years after their deaths and their music is still beloved by countless people. I know Greg was talking about rock musicians but the same standards will apply to them over the decades and centuries to come.

It's an old adage but still holds true even now, "Quality Lasts". Simple and to the point.

Great example of that is the original Metallica line up.

Cream and The Police are both good examples and are some of the better trios.

Peolpe underestimate kirk hammet's importantce to Metallica outside of his guitar playing. He is nearly egoless which is saying something because he is a talented soloist.

He is really. He kind of gets bitched around by the two ego maniac co-founders haha.

Mustaine was too much for them to control.

I love Hammet though. Great guitarist (little overrated), but great.

The Police and Cream are both great examples as well.

(Love the Police. Copeland is one of the best around)
