R.E.M., U2, RHCP come to mind immediately for me. Their influence is evident in much of the music of today. In the case of U2 they're not only influential on other band they are still at the top of their game with record breaking tours and one of the best albums of their career.

I agree with all of that... those are the top contenders! My favorite is the RHCP. I think REM paved the way for the more alternative rock sound that grew in the 90s.

I did not know about their history very much, that pretty much explained their change. I will rephrase what I said, they didn't stay true to their original sound.

how is not staying true to their original sound (or vision) different than calling them sellouts?

right, and in the case of the chili peppers i think it's pretty clear that their change in style had a lot more to do with exploring new artistic ground than making a buck. metallica on the other hand, i'm still not convinced hehehe

And the RHCP did get a LOT better from their skate boarding/surfing video days. It seemed more of a natural progression for them.

As for Metallica, I think they went in the opposite direction. From good to bad. But that's just my 2 cents.

The bands that started their big albums in the 80's and have made it out "Alive and Well" and will probably keep their place in Rock history to me seem to be:
U2
REM
Ozzy (solo)
Duran Duran
Def Leppard

It's recently been announced that Rick Rubin is producing the new Metallica album...so expect a big return to form for them.

The Smiths split up in 1988...so they didn't make it out of that decade alive. Was the 'legacy' even that influential after the 80s?
