I find Dylan to be whiney and nasaly. I wouldn't consider Jagger ruff or gruff either.

Okay, but given the description in the first post of this thread, AboutAGirl clearly has a pretty broad definition of "rough and gruff" (Jagger, Dylan, Cash) and I was just going off that. Did you guys even bother to read the first post?

They don't all have to sound like Cookie Monster to qualify.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'm liking Costello's voice a lot. *thumbs up*

I kinda think Dylan and Cash have some pretty rough n gruff vocals though, at least in the later years.

Oh check out Henry Rollins. Black Flag and Rollins Band are among my favorites. Henry sure can sound like he's gargling glass. :D

I think when we say "rough and gruff", we're talking about a "sandpaper quality" of voice (Rod Stewart being perhaps the most famous and stereotypical example). There's a "gravel" factor in that kind of voice that I don't think is characteristic of Elvis Costello at all. His singing has an undisciplined quality about it, but I would not characterize it as "rough" or "gruff".
