Then why do you turn right around and argue the point below?

That's largely an archaic point of view, especially in this day and age. You could put together a much better playlist with an mp3 player than simply by throwing on an album, if all you want is music that you enjoy.

Yes, I love that kind of stuff too. But even here you're talking individual songs and not whole albums.

for the first part, what I said was/is very lighthearted..:)

I could, and do.. why limit myself to just one though?.. I have to listen to the albums to find those "hidden" songs, and I enjoy listening to the albums..

Those are the songs I find by listening to the albums, and those play lists are just what I listen to the car or to learn songs when I play guitar..

At this day in age I have the thrills from the past(albums) and the benefit of picking, choosing, and skipping songs(playlists).. I need to mix it up:grinthumb

But there's soooo much more to it than that. There are a million songs that I'd barely appreciate on a shuffle list, but they are incredible pieces of art in the context of a consequential album. :D

A record can mean more than the sum of the tracks.

It can but most albums aren't anywhere close to being that good. Most albums are nothing more than a collection of songs. In fact, most albums are a couple of good songs and a bunch of filler.

Perhaps most albums are full of filler. But I have about 500 records in my collection that aren't. The album format can elevate everything to such heights. If all we had was individual songs, I'd barely even listen to music. *shrug*

Very, very few bands compared to others.. In 2010 alone I've found more bands that I like or at least are doing something original, not the same thing every other band and their mothers are doing:heheh: Granted, there is still a lot of awful music, but as goes with any decade there is a healthy mix of both, for the most part:grinthumb

two words: Animal. Collective.

nobody was doing was those guys did during the 00's. no one

I can't stand that band:heheh:

I can respect them, but I can't stand that sound....

i'm just saying, it was fresh, and it was new. plus they were popular, i believe Merriweather Post Pavilion got into the top 10.

add them to a band like Sigur Ros with their wall of sound, or LCD Soundsystem and their dance punk sound. or even bands like Broken Social Scene or Arcade Fire that pack their albums with different and unique sounds in all varieties. hell, even the Decemberists are a blend of folk and progressive rock. all of these are really new and fresh sounds in rock. not the same old boring sounds being rehashed and rehased, that's hair metal

I agree with most of your taste Tattooed Lady and if you notice anytime this topic comes up it's a lost cause. :heheh: People are rooted and embedded into the era that they listened to in their peak years of listening to music. Their are some exceptions and those are the peoples I seek. I move backwards to enhance my knowledge of thy dubbed "classics" and I have the most fun conversing with the ones that can not only teach me the past but are also willing to explore the present and future. I just ignore the stubborn ones musically and "Live and let live" so to speak. Strangely enough I only get more and more excited with each year as I get to keep adding to my empire of taste and I can't really argue these things because I haven't got stuck in a rut like most. Seems like you haven't either. My peak should have been the 90's but I have albums in the 2,000's that have blown me away and have had crazy endlesss play rotation. Thank you anything pre-90's for getting the ball rolling up to to the 90's and thank you for the memories 90's but I've moved on! :heheh:

One thing I have to add in general to the thread is I feel bad for anyone who can't delve into an album for more than one or two tracks. I think the single is like a cover to the book. Sure it draws you in but the real story and meat of the music is within the album.

These would the eras from best to last for me!

The 90's

The Smashing Pumpkins emerged and had their whole career with their original lineup within this decade, Tori Amos started her solo career, Fiona Apple emerged, the New Radicals gave me the best pop album I've ever heard, Ben Folds Five emerged, Jimmy Eat World emerged, Counting Crows emerged, Our Lady Peace emerged, NIN was one year from debuting but had his (Trent's best work), Snow Patrol emerged, Aerosmith, Meatloaf and Bon Jovi created my favorite works of their career, rap was at it's peak (as a rap fan I can judge), we had the last good soul/R&B groups and lastly......................................

Grunge/Alternative-No offense but I started with a lot of the late 80's, early 90's metal bands and I liked songs from them but I was glad the party was over. Not all the grunge era stuff was depressing but I was glad bands talked about darker things in depth along with the songs about parties, drugs and woman. I'm not even talking about the poster child ****ing Nirvana. I was into them but they weren't the cream of the crop at all for me. There were so many bands that naming my favorites, favorites as buying their whole catalog (mostly) to this day. I really can't understand (if we are talking constructively how Live sounds like Bush sounds like Soundgarden sounds like Soul Asylum)! I could probably defend almost any band of that era but not in an online screaming match. I don't have the digital lung capacity. :heheh:

The 2,000's-

This was the year for amazing new artist mostly through the modern folk/Singer Songwriter artist! My second favorite band of all time I've been more excited than ever during this time and my addiction has been at it's peak! Damien Rice, David Ford, City and Colour, ForeverInMotion, etc. (know there's more) have given me artist and albums that compete with my 90's favorites.

My second favorite band of all time South FM came out and dropped two masterpiece albums.

Greenwheel and Brand New dropped twoe of my top 20 favorite albums ever!

2,000 marked the birth of the most gorgeous song I've ever heard and my second favorite overall.

Music became fun and rocking at the same time with The Darkness and The Scissor Sisters. Songs were becoming epic masterpieces from artist like Something Corporate, .....And You Will Know Us By Our Trail of Dead, From Autumn to Ashes, Jimmy Eat World, etc.

Acoustic made a strong comeback from artist like the aforementioned folkies as well as Dashboard Confessional and The Spill Canvas. Lyrics were at their most personal! Rock songs embraced pianos, female harmonies and orchestration with all of rocks heavy qualities to make a gorgeous blend.

Bands like The Used made me love heavy music by adding balance to the screaming.

Taking Back Sunday became a band I loved only to produced one of my all time favorite artist Straylight Run once one of the co-founders left! Johnny Cash made my favorite music of his!

Christian rock became mainstream and produced amazing bands like Anberlin, Relient K, Mae, Switchfoot, Waking Ashland and Flyleaf!

Pop found it's peak IMO!

This was all off the top of my head and I know I left stuff out but that's my love letter to 2,000! :grinthumb
