I'd say that it depends on the person in question.

If a man were on the verge of curing AIDS, and was murdered (and all of his research couldn't be duplicated for whatever reason), his life sure as hell would have been worth more than anyone else on the planet.

Historically speaking, the deaths of Gandhi and Hitler were far more important than anyone else's (for very different reasons).

When it comes to celebrities...I'll agree, they're generally not as important. Still, they have had an impact on people's lives to some extent, and the large amount of people affected by their deaths probably has a lot to do with what makes the difference.

All that said, I'm certain that John Lennon would agree that his life wasn't worth any more than your average Joe.

One of the biggest reasons the guy shouldn't be released is because he's going to get killed. He WILL be a victim of a hate crime. And while this would please me to absolutely no end, it would mean another killer would be going to prison. Prisoners are just numbers. Doesn't matter who the hell they are. If they let one guy go, only to have another guy taking his place eventually, it's kind of worthless.

He's just being protected by the government. He deserves to die in prison. One less worthless bastard your taxes are paying to keep alive behind bars. A bullet would have been so much cheaper, and would have taken care of Chapman in 1980 rather than 2010+. Stupid bastard, I'm surprised he lived this long and didn't get his ass kicked so hard he was disemboweled through the mouth.

(I could go on for ages about this guy.)

I saw a Documentary about John's murder once, and from what I remember of it, Chapman was deranged, believed Lennon had offended him in some of his songs or something. In short, he wasn't what you'd consider sane.
I'm neither here nor there on this issue. He's served a lifetime worth of prison. People who do far worse crimes get off easily sometimes, although I'm not implying that what he did was any less horrific.
That said, if he does come out, It'd be really interesting to watch what happens to him. he's obviously going to be in media highlight. And as someone here said, "how many crazy people must there be who are ready to kill somebody that the whole world hates?"

As I said, Interesting :D

That's creepy, particularly because IIRC that's the same reason that Dimebag Darrell's murderer had.

It's not uncommon for people with mental illnesses, not too uncommon to schizophrenia, to hear messages in songs, TV, etc.

Charles Manson believed the White Album was encouraging his crimes.

It's the same concept as with those wackos that stalk newsreaders who believe have formed a "special connection" with them. :bonk:

i like john lennon
buts its disgusting that people regard one persons life as more important than another persons.
there are most likely people who shot people in 1980, who were parolled long ago. mark david chapman deserves the same justice as the next person.

and to be honest i dont think murderers should ever be released, but like i said there has probably been murderers who commited their crimes in 1980 who have long been paroled.

just because someone wrote brilliant music, and was a member of a classic "pop" group. doesn't mean their life is worth more than say a guy who works at a factory

Finally, exactly.
And Like I said before, the guy clearly didn't do it for fame, or for anything like that. He obviously had problems. But he's been well behaved for almost 20 years now, there are people who get paroled after 3 years, there was this one murder, someone murdered a teenager with their friend, in 2006, guess what, last year one of the murderers got paroled for "good behaviour", so MDC did the same thing, except with a 40 year old man, and hes been locked away for 30 years. I hate murder as much as any of you, but thats not justice, don't double standard, either keep others in as long as him(which I would prefer, but its unlikely), or let him out as long as he keeps his behaviour well.

I'm probably going to get shot on here now for saying all this.

And the guy didn't even flee the scene, he let the cops take him away and he pleaded guilty despite being told to plead not guilty by his lawyers, he seems like a MUCH better guy than A LOT of guys I've heard about in the past few years, and some of them being free men. And keeping him there WON'T bring John Lennon back

So you support murder as long as its not John Lennon? Thats basically what I got out of it. It shows that you don't really care that he committed a murder, its that he murdered John Lennon. That is pretty backwards. The guy has served his time and its his responsibility to watch out for himself, not the government. He's been on good behaviour for nearly 20 years and the only thing keeping him there is the fact that he killed a celebrity.
