Re: Weezer

I'm a huge weezer fan. Blue album and Pinkerton are both brilliant, the good songs have been a little more far between since but the still pull out some crackers

This is one of my favourite songs of all time.

I have to tell you, I ****ing hated Weezer when they came out. However, since getting into satellite radio, I have been listening again to heavy doses of 90's music, and I really dig their stuff now. I don't have anything in the collection, and I guess I should. I enjoy the fact, that like the Offspring, they all have degrees, but are making music, almost just for fun. Buddy Holly is probably my favorite of theirs.

I just had myself listen to Pinkerton for the first time and I've got to be honest. I don't get the cult status it has and think it's far from Weezers best material. It wasn't horrible but ironically it influenced a lot of bands I'm into so it has it's good points. :grinthumb

Re: Weezer

There music is pretty good but I've always taken issue with their image. They seem like they're weird for the sake of weird, which to me is about as vapid as it gets. I get mad that geeks, outcasts, and weirdos get portrayed that way. They have reasons for the ways they act, they're not just doing it for the heck of it. 'Course maybe Weezer has their reasons, too. But seems to me they portray themselves as being in it for no good reason.

Have you heard Rivers solo album? I think it might change your mind if you haven't because it's legitimately weird. The qualities reminded me of the Nirvana box set as to how raw the material was and definitely weird in a not as goofy or wacky way. So all in all I think the guys pretty legit! :grinthumb

Here's a track where he sings one of my all time favorite artists, Gregg Alexanders song. You have to be a geek to know the guy from the New Radicals had a solo career! :heheh:

I have unusual sentiments on "Pinkerton". I think "The Blue Album" is the better album but for some reason I really love "Pinkerton" more. Just something about how it hits you from all of these different places with the variety of dynamics and angles and everything and yet almost the entire album is written from the first form on the guitar. Like, one song I'll use as an example is "Across The Sea" since it starts off these very soft piano before some of the most distorted guitar since Hendrix, and yet the guitar is kept relatively quiet still with the focus being on the vocal harmonies. As the song goes along it breaks into a really cool solo before stripping the song down to virtually nothing but soft vocals before finally driving the song home. Like that one song for example and the unique combination of elements that it brought together is what makes me love "Pinkerton".

Weezer has always been really nerdy, even back when they first started back when dirty grunge kids and rappers were popular. I don't think they look or act weird just for the sake of doing so. I think they just comfortable with being very white and nerdy. I mean, Rivers did graduate from Harvard after all. :D

I like Pinkerton because it takes a lot to tell the world stuff like that, it's like Rivers Cuomo is dumping his heart out to us. It is also a pretty musically solid album.

If you knew me better than you would know that's a quality I love in music so perhaps I should like Pinkerton by rights but I just find that particular connection in the album. I respect the fact that Rivers is not afraid to make himself the subject of his songwriting though whether it be good or bad! :grinthumb
