Ozzy got the job because a local band needed a singer with a PA. The guy is almost completely untalented, literally one of the most overrated vocalists of all time. Tony Iommi himself said the reason their is no Sabbath live alum with Ozzy is because Ozzy was constantly out of tune. Meanwhile, Dio got the gig because a large, established band need a talented and professional singer. There is no comparison.

If Mickey Mouse was the first vocalist of Black Sabbath, everyone would talk about how Mickey is a great frontman, sang all these classic tunes like "War Ducks", "Iron Mouse", and "Mice Wear Boots", and we would all be wondering who is playing the next MouseFest. He's the Michael Anthony of that band.

Ozzy is no worse than Bob Dylan or Iggy Pop and they all are legends. While I'll never say Ozzy is a particularly talented singer since his voice is very thin and has little range I will say that the man has one of the most distinctive voices in music and his eerie vocals were very important to Sabbath. While Ronnie is by far a more talented singer Ozzy's vocals fit the darker, creepier tone of early Sabbath classics such as their self titled song.

I agree with most everything you said. Purely from a talent standpoint, anybody who compares Ozzy with the likes of Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson or Ronnie James Dio is just insulting the latter three.

Personally, my favorite era of Sabbath was the Tony Martin-era. He isn't as good of a singer as Glenn Hughes, Ian Gillan or Ronnie James Dio but as Ozzy proved, you don't have to be.

Most rock journalists remark that Sabbath albums like Eternal Idol, Headless Cross and Tyr flopped, which is true commercially. Yet if you put Dio's voice on a lot of those same songs, some of them would be on the list of Sabbath classics. (Tony Iommi isn't a slouch when it comes to songwriting, not at all). But because Martin sung them, they suck in the eyes of a lot of people.

Either way, I loved the majority of the work from the Martin-era.

Its definitely Ozzy for me!

I saw Ozzy's last tour with Black Sabbath in Nov. 1978, then I saw Dio's first tour with Sabbath in Sept. '80. Both were great shows, but Sabbath is not quite Sabbath without Ozzy.

No disrespect to the late great RJD, but Sabbath isn't Sabbath without Ozzy. Is Ozzy a better "vocalist" than Dio? Who cares? I don't listen to those first (best) Sabbath albums to hear vocal talent.
