Mine is not at that stage yet Jack, thankfully. I just play my music at modest levels and make sure I use hearing protection when I am doing anything that involves loud noise.

I wouldn't wish it on anyone though, it is very distracting.

There are some great CD's out there that have soul, I have 100's of them in the library.

Poorly mastered transfers are what gave digital a bad name years ago, but they have come a long way since then. You are just as dependent upon the engineers doing a good job initially with the recording process as anything else in the chain.

I have great sounding vinyl albums, and crappy ones.

Same for Cassettes(Pre-recorded ones), the ones I have made myself sound better than the label releases.

CD's, they are variable like everything else, but when I play Stravinsky's "Firebird" on Living Presence CD, it is breathtaking and it was recorded before I was born.

DVD's, they are amazing, when I compare the sound of my VHS tapes to DVD's there is no comparison, everything is better.

The key to all this is a combination of everything from the initial recording to the equipment you have and even the room you listen to your music in. Get everything right and anything you play will sound good.

And Hep I have been an audiophile since 1979, and I have added digital to the arsenal without any problems.

This is all true.. Poor quality shoved out the door in hopes of millions buying them..
I started to really focus on record labels because of this.. Many a good LP was just a shitty recording.. Lack of money or lazy engineers who didn't put forth the effort..
But I guess now day's you get the big bonus.... Digital Remastered...
But it's a CD..:wtf:
I bought a Helix CD that was remastered and the volume is peaked out to the level of distortion..

You are right about some remasters, the damned engineers screwed things up big time on some of them. Instead of maintaining the original balance and just cleaning/improving things a little they throw the whole recording out of whack.:nw: The properly done remasters are an improvement, but there is always the sneaking suspicion the record labels are trying to make yet another dollar off the old catalog by offering a continual series of "new improved" CD's. Like the new improved Tide laundry detergent, it's been improving since I was a little kid. I wonder what was wrong with the original formula.:hm:

Compression to give extra loudness sucks. Just buy bigger amps and better speakers.

I use MP3 for my iPod only, and FLAC for anything else

FLAC is my favorite format other than WAV of course Davorp.

I have a couple of hard drives with FLAC copies of my CD's, in case anything happens to the original I can make a perfect replacement.:D

Mine is in the left, primarily. Perhaps we could arrange for a swap? :)

Had both eardrums rupture during a flight to Atlanta. They were still bleeding a few days later. The right ear rings badly, but lately has felt stuffy and needs the equalize pressure. It helps to listen to headphones at work. I've learned to hear around it... and may even hear better because of it in some ways.

You want real sound...
