I was so surprised that there wasn't any threads on The Mars Volta yet. Imo they are one of the best bands to come out in the 2000's. The Mars Volta have so many influences in any given song that it is hard to pick them all out. Omar Rodriguez Lopez is one of my favorite guitarists to come out in the last twenty years. Frontmen Cedric Bixler-Zavalva is esscentric, energetic, and with jaw dropping range. This is a must have in any rock fans collection kinda band.

Mate, I have tried but I couldn`t get into them. Just a bit unorthodox for my tastes, but they are talented aplenty, I`ll give you that.

I can see that. I feel if people don't like them it is for that reason. I always thought The Mars Volta could be a great subsitute for acid

I like them but they definitely aren't a regular listen. I have to be in the mood considering it's ambitious music that's not overly accessible. Prog fans may be fine with it but the parts that are just noise should be trimmed IMO. I have no problem with length and I even like industrial tunes which are mechanical but hearing constants notes of shit clanging is pointless IMO. My favorite song by them is their biggest hit:

The Widow

I also like this tune:

I remember listening to them years ago and like Greg said it's almost like doing a hit of acid.

I do really like "Deloused in the Comatorium", it's my favorite CD of theirs.

I've only got Deloused In The Comatorium, and I can only really listen to it when I'm in the right mood. It's a lot different from what I usually listen to, but it's pretty good music too. I'm still in the process of finding out about them, hopefully in time I'll grow to really enjoy them :)

Only having listened to Deloused in the Comatorium, I find it very refreshing with the blend of modern metal, prog. elements, psych/space passages, punk and jazz fusion. With that being said, the shifting soundscapes at times can be abrasive and oppressive, chaotic and frantic. Be prepared for a sonic onslaught. For me, a challenging listen.
