Re: The Sound Of The Kinks

I am also a long time Kinks fan as well! The Kinks are one of my favorite bands, in several ways. Some of their earlier songs maybe rather simplistic in some ways, but they were both catchy, relevant and have an excellent combination of songwriting (mostly Ray Davies) and the unique talents and sounds of Dave Davies. Dave is a terrific, extremely skilled and versatile guitarist, imo! He was very innovative 'customizing' some of his equipment in the beginning of The Kinks music. Imo, he his as responsible (in a very good way) for the cool, unique guitar sounds and styles on the earlier albums, as well as continuing throughout the following years for many excellent riffs, solos and trademark sounds, as Ray is very well known for the specific lyrical content of most of the songs. Dave Davies is also an exemplary songwriter in is own right. Some may or may not know of this. But he has released a few solo releases over the years that I certainly enjoy and are quite good, too!

I will return to this thread asap, with more comments and insights, as time permits! :)

Re: The Sound Of The Kinks

The song that got me into the Kinks was Death Of A Clown by Dave Davies, this is still one of my favorite songs. I like sad and melancholic songs like Death Of A Clown, seem like I can identify with them

The Davies brothers are gifted songwriters, I love the lyrics of Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, Lola or Apeman. It's great to see that Ray is still on the road playing the songs and releasing new albums.

"plastic man" is one of my favourites, it didn't do well in the charts though because the BBC wouldn't play it because it had the word bum in the lyrics.

@ shauntole I agree one of their best songs is Death of a Clown, the partnership wasn't always smooth running, Ray and Dave used to have fist fights over their music.

Read about the differences between Ray and Dave. Seems like that in many successful bands, the main musicians were arguing a lot. Maybe this was necessary to unveil all their creativity and ideas. Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards or Waters/Gilmore come to my mind when I think of these problematic partnerships.

Doesn't surprise me that they disagreed a lot of the time, the tension usually makes for more creative energy and better songs/albums.

I'm no expert, but according to many articles I've read Ray was not a Class guy...one magazine even quoted more than one person referring to him as "An Insufferable Lout"...:D

The Kinks are one of my favorites & the album that helped me discover them was actually 'Low Budget' which still remains as one of my favorites of all-time. After I bought that I bought a Greatest Hits Record with all their old 60's stuff which I ended up Loving. They released their 'One for the Road album' & I was really hooked. I love thier kind of reggae version of "Till the End of the Day" which I love putting the raw rocking original version on right afterwards. I then picked up Sleepwalker which is another favorite & over the years I think I have everything they put out. I seen them twice & they are amazing Live. I seen them live in 1980 & 82 & the 82 concert was so wild because the venue was only half full because they sandwiched between The Stones & The Who playing opposite weekends & the Grateful Dead were playing the same day. Ray Davies said they were going to blow away the other bands & they may have succeeded(although I didn't see the others). They played at least 7 encores & then the houselights went up & they ran back out & played "Pressure"(for the 2nd time) "Louie Louie" with the houselights on!

Man, I wish I'd seen that concert!
