If there is one genius at making beautiful compositions of music out of depression, darkness, anger and despair it's Nine Inch Nails. Like it or not, Trent brought Industrial to the masses! One thing is for sure! He did it without compromise or lack of creative genius! This guy can create sounds with anything and is a meticulous perfectionist. He puts an insane level of thought into the process and how everything is put together. There are very few mad geniuses in modern times and Trent is definitely one of them! I came into NIN's music like most of the average fans. I had heard Head Like a Hole as a single and later down the road I caught on to the wave that was The Downward Spiral and became immersed. Since this I've bought most of NIN's catalog and I'm rarely disappointed with anything except for his excess of releasing a 1,000 remixes of the same song. That's just the perfectionist quailty of Trent though. He is so immersed in the potential of his art or art in general that he will never be satisfied. Maybe it's good that's he released himself of NIN so he can come back fresh later down the road.

Anyway, here are my picks for NIN masterpieces! :grinthumb

Pretty Hate Machine

Head Like A Hole
(My Intro)

Something I Can Never Have
(Wow! I love this version of an already beautiful dark masterpiece)

The Downward Spiral

Hurt
(Not only is this a classic in it's original form but it inspired Johnny Cash's most resonating moment)

Soundtracks:

The Perfect Drug
(not on a studio album but my favorite NIN song bar none)

Dead Souls (Joy Division cover)

Re: "The Official" Nine Inch Nails Thread

I respect Trent a ton, but am not a big fan of his music.

Still he definitely deserves a thread of his own, especially by our most Loquacious mod.:grinthumb

Re: "The Official" Nine Inch Nails Thread

I'm always willing to revisit a band to see if I missed something.

Recommend the Strongest album and I'll give Trent another shot.

One reason I really respect Reznor is he broke away from his record label after the 3rd NIN album I believe, he was shocked when he realized that the label Owned the copyright to all the music released by them, so he decided that he would record on his own label after the contractual obligations were fulfilled and has become a One man music machine now.

He played here last year, and put on a great concert according to the fans that attended.:grinthumb

I'm spread out over the board with NIN's albums. No one classic but based on what I know about you LG The Fragile is what I would recommend! Great album that I believe gains new fans each year and is a cult classic IMO just like Adore is for Smashing pumpkins. It's very melodic and moody (even some positivity creeps in :D) and takes you on a journey an album should with a mix of heaviness, mellow scores and plain great music! :grinthumb

not listened to them a lot I really like their cover of Joy Divisions, Dead Souls, but I'm a big Joy Division fan anyway.

Trent Reznor has retired Nine Inch Nails for now and has been doing other ventures like scoring film. Here's his score work for "The Social Network":
